Cher has revealed her mother Georgia Holt had suffered a long illness before her death this week and was ‘in so much pain’.

The pop icon, 76, announced her mother’s death in the early hours of Sunday morning, simply writing: ‘Mom is gone,’ with a sad face emoji.

She has since shared details about Holt’s health issues while still processing the death of her loved one.

Replying to one concerned fan on Twitter, Cher said: ‘I’m not sad…. We set her free. She is no longer crying out in Pain 24/7. She is her happy, funny Insane, beautiful Self.’

In another tweet, the Believe singer revealed: ‘She’s been so sick so long,The day she died she didn’t look like my beautiful crazy mom.’

Cher had earlier told fans that she rushed to the hospital as Holt’s health deteriorated on Saturday but didn’t make it in time.

In September, Cher revealed Georgia was battling a string of health problems but reassured followers that she was improving and that home was the ‘best place’ for her to be.

After a break from social media, she explained: ‘Sorry I’ve Been MIA. Mom’s Been Sick Off and On. She Just Got Out Of Hosp. She Had Pneumonia. She’s Getting Better.’

The following day, she said: ‘Home is the best medicine for her.’

As well as being known as Cher’s mum, Holt herself was a singer in her earlier years and began by singing on an Oklahoma City radio station when she was six, before joining bandleader Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys by age 10.

She also went on to make several TV appearances in shows such as I Love Lucy and The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet.

Holt was the focus of a 2013 Lifetime documentary, Dear Mom, Love Cher, which her famous daughter executive produced about their family history.
