Millions of people have been lapping up Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Netflix documentary since the first volume of the bombshell series was released on the platform last week.

However, the programme’s ratings couldn’t surpass Addams Family hit series Wednesday, which clinched the number one spot of the week.

Last month, Wednesday made its debut on the site with Jenna Ortega in the lead role, with the 20-year-old playing the deadpan daughter of Morticia and Gomez Addams who’s sent off to Nevermore Academy, a school dedicated to educating outcasts.

In its third week on Netflix, the show has surpassed 1billion total hours viewed, becoming only the third release to achieve such a feat within its first 28 days, following on from Squid Game and the fourth season of Stranger Things.

In the past week, Wednesday held onto its number one spot on the charts, remaining there in a whopping 90 countries, with 150million households having watched the eight-part comedy horror since it came out, Netflix revealed.

In the past week alone, Wednesday garnered more than 269m hours viewed, with fans continuing to rave over Jenna and the rest of the cast’s performance, as well as the lead character’s viral dance routine, which was choreographed by the actress.

The dance even caught the attention of Mother Monster Lady Gaga, who recreated it on social media to her track Bloody Mary.

Harry & Meghan, on the other hand, broke a record on Netflix by becoming the highest-viewed documentary in its first week, accumulating 81.55m hours viewed.

Within four days, 28m households watched the first three episodes, with millions expected to watch the second volume when it drops on the platform on Thursday December 15.

Following the release of the first volume, a clip of Meghan recreating the moment she curtsied in front of the Queen went viral on social media, with some people interpreting it as the duchess making a mockery of the tradition.

However, comedian David Baddiel jumped to her defence, tweeting: ‘That clip where Meghan demonstrates how she overdid her first curtsey to the Queen – that’s what she’s doing – showing how she overdid it – laughing at herself for getting it wrong – everyone in the orgy of bad faith saying she’s mocking The Queen/British customs knows this.’

He added: ‘I’m extremely uninterested in the Sussex v Royal debate. But I am interested in the way that laughter has been weaponised on here and elsewhere to exclude context and nuance and become reclassified as only mockery.’

Harry & Meghan and Wednesday are available to watch on Netflix.
