The first poster for Joaquin Phoenix’s upcoming ‘nightmare comedy’ has been unveiled – along with its new title.
Joaquin, 48, will star as the title character in Beau Is Afraid next year, which was originally named Disappointment Blvd.
The somewhat eerie poster shows a portrait of what seems to be a young version of Joaquin’s character smiling as he wears silver silk pyjamas with his name embroidered on the breast.
Details of the plot are yet to be revealed, but the film’s director Ari Aster – who also gave us Midsommar and Hereditary – has previously shared his next movie would be a four-hour long ‘intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time.’
Despite saying the film is not a horror, Ari reassured his fans he will return to the genre in the future.
During a Reddit AMA in 2019, he said: ‘It might take me a few movies before I wind back around to horror.

‘But I love horror and I’m sure I’ll be back. Head trauma will ALWAYS have a place in my films.’
Production on Beau Is Afraid closed in October 2021, with Joaquin starring alongside Nathan Lane, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Patti LuPone, Amy Ryan and Parker Posey.
Stephen has previously told The Hollywood Reporter: ‘Joaquin and Ari were so simpatico, and they worked together for the whole film.

‘I came in pretty close to the end of the shoot and so they had been working a while. And their way of working together was like they were really old friends.
‘They could get upset and make up in the span of seconds, it seemed. But the work was always the better for it.’
Joaquin is currently filming the sequel to Joker, subtitled Folie À Deux, where he will star alongside Lady Gaga, who is playing Harley Quinn.
