Katie Holmes’ questionable outfit choices have been defended by her stylist after fans slammed her Y2K inspired red carpet ensemble.

The star’s personal stylist Brie Welch hit back at online haters after they mocked the actress’s long tunic over baggy jeans look for the Jingle Ball red carpet in New York.

Sharing the inspiration behind the dated outfit, Brie revealed it came from a collaboration of the fashion professional’s portfolio as the pair were opting for a more ‘youthful feel’.

The 43-year-old stirred up the internet after stepping onto the glossy festival carpet in a blue satin mini-dress-esque number that fell below her waist atop baggy washed-out blue jeans and black trainers.

Speaking with The New York Times, Katie’s stylist commented: ‘We decided the rich colour and subtle bustier effect detailing of the top was elegant and would be fun if paired with jeans, creating a more youthful feel for Jingle Ball and the atmosphere there.’

It was also revealed the choice of shoe was decided by the All We Had actress so she could dance and be comfortable.

Brie added: ‘On the day of (and because Katie has her own effortless style that should be appreciated here), she said she wanted to wear sneakers, because it was a concert and obviously there would be a lot of dancing to Dua Lipa (and nothing is more comfortable!).’

Topping off her comments on Katie she emphasised the star is ‘more than capable of looking cool in an unintentional trend 20 years later’.

The pair took to their Instagram accounts to clear things up after the stylist reposted her article alongside a statement listing the blue satin ordeal as a top and not a dress – a post that Katie re-shared on her own social channels.

Katie caused quite the stir with her appearance the past few days after online users branded her look something out of the Y2K fashion era and claimed the noughties flashback made them ‘sick’.

One user tweeted: ‘Katie Holmes woke up and decided it was 2002.’

Another penned: ‘Love Katie Holmes on the 2002 iHeartRadio Jingle Ball red carpet.’

One account asked: ‘Wait… Is this picture recent???? I thought it was from the early 2000s.’

Metro.co.uk contacted Katie’s reps for comment.
