Netflix has endured more rage recently than any other streaming service – with many people howling about its stereotyping of the UK as a racist country in the Harry and Meghan documentary.

But, love it or hate it, you can’t ignore Netflix and no other rival is getting tongues wagging quite like it.

The comeback arrives as the doom-and-gloom merchants were ready to write it off was finished.

A drop in subscribers and a new pricing model led to an inevitable chorus of people announcing that there was no way back for the original streaming giant. Hyperbole, sure, but many believed that Netflix’s output had been getting weaker.

You only need to look at the figures to see that 2022 has been one of the most successful for Netflix on record. Stranger Things continued to be a smash hit with its fourth series slipping into second place on its list of most-watched shows (behind Squid Game) with 1.35 billion hours watched.

Then Dahmer proved there’s nothing the world loves more than a sexy serial killer, with a surprising 856.2 million hours watched, putting it in third place.

But the big drama hit of the year has to be Wednesday, which has already stormed into fourth place on their list with 752.5 million hours watched in just a couple of weeks.

It’s easy to suggest that the success of this comedy-horror series was inevitable, but there was more risk involved with it than first appears.

For a start, Tim Burton may be a famous old name but he’s had an up-and-down presence at the box office since 2003. Jenna Ortega has proven to be a real breakout star but she was hardly a household name before taking on the iconic role.

And who would have thought that The Addams Family would still have some cultural cachet in 2022? Yet the show’s blend of gothic humour and murder-mystery has proven irresistible.

And then, of course, there’s Harry and Meghan. The controversial doc may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s got people talking in a way few TV shows have ever done.
