Dick Van Dyke celebrated his 97th birthday in his usual charming style – with a smile and a cheeky joke.

The Mary Poppins legend marked his big day on Tuesday, and was naturally still out and about in Malibu just a few days before, and as spry as ever.

However, he insisted he had no big plans for the occasion, despite reaching such an impressive age.

The popular actor, who was launched to stardom all the way back in 1960, lives out in sunny LA with his second wife Arlene Silver, who he married in 2012.

He’s often pictured around town in casual clothing, and is known to regularly give out cash to those in need.

Ahead of Tuesday, he was in his usual attire, sporting a cosy-looking tan sweater and grey jogging bottoms, paired with slip-on shoes and carrying a black shoulder bag, in pictures published by DailyMail.com.

Speaking to the publication about his birthday, he quipped: ‘Well, if I’d known I was going to live this long I’d have taken better care of myself!’

When asked about his secret to a long and healthy life, he laughingly added: ‘Well, I don’t know, all my friends are dead so I’m not going to complain!’

He also revealed he would be ‘just hiding out’ on the day itself.

Dick is known for being of the ‘use it or lose it’ school of thought, and still acts today, seventy years after his career first began.

Indeed, he appeared in Mary Poppins Returns as a return to the beloved franchise, and put us all to shame by having a boogie on a table at the age of 92.

The dad-of-four and grandfather-of-seven also showed of his great sense of humour by sporting what can only be described as the most brilliant sweatshirt earlier this year, which had ‘A spoonful of sugar’ written on the front, in reference to the 1964 movie.

He walked the red carpet of the Annual Kennedy Center Honors last year as a honoree too, alongside actress Debbie Allen, musicians Joan Baez and Garth Brooks, and violinist Midori, looking dapper in black tie and using a smart cane.
