Amazon’s God Of War series has been given the greenlight, with the showrunner of Wheel of Time and the creators of The Expanse in charge.
It’s still hard to believe that it was Sonic The Hedgehog, of all things, which broke the decades long curse of video game movies but despite its success it’s still TV that is seeing the majority of new projects, especially from Sony.
Shows based on everything from The Last Of Us to Twisted Metal and Horizon are supposedly underway and while a God Of War show was mooted earlier in the year it’s only now that it’s been given the greenlight by Amazon.
There’s still no clue as to who will play Kratos, which seems an impossible role given the physique and voice required, but it’s already been confirmed that the show will be an adaptation of the 2018 soft reboot and not any of the earlier PlayStation 2 and 3 games.
Although it’s still not known who will be in front of the camera, Rafe Judkins from The Wheel of Time will act as showrunner and The Expanse creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby with both write and executive produce, along with Judkins.
That’s some pretty notable talent, which suggests that the show as a whole will be a big budget affair. Plus, Cory Barlog, director of the 2018 game, will also serve as an executive producer – which is a good sign that the show will stick close to the tone and aesthetic of the games.
‘When his beloved wife dies,’ reads the show description, according to The Hollywood Reporter. ‘Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak – his wife’s final wish.
‘Kratos soon realises the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new gods and monsters for the fate of the world.’
That’s exactly the plot of the 2018 game, and while there’s still a lot that can go wrong, especially when it comes to casting, it’s all sounding very encouraging.
