The Traitors star Meryl has dished the dirt on what happens behind the scenes of the BBC One mystery programme.

Hosted by Strictly’s Claudia Winkleman, the nail-biting series, which follows a group of 22 ordinary people suss out who the traitors are for a cash prize, has taken the nation by storm.

Meryl is one of the faithfuls trying to work out who in the Scottish Highlands house is trying to sabotage their efforts and take the £120,000 all for themselves.

The traitors are given the powers to ‘murder’ a faithful, while the entire household are able to ‘banish’ a contestant they suspect is double-crossing them and, of course, there’s back-stabbing and drama aplenty.

But as well as all the on-air tension, which has even seen a dramatic showdown at breakfast, viewers have been desperate to know what happens when the cameras aren’t rolling

Meryl, 25, did us all a massive favour and answered fans’ burning questions on TikTok, including what they did on their days off and if they had any contact with the outside world.

At the end of each episode, viewers will spot the contestants trying to unwind with a glass of wine or a beer, but Meryl has revealed they didn’t booze every night.

‘We didn’t drink every night, we got it every couple of nights and it was like rationed,’ she explained, ‘Well not rationed, but we got like one or two glasses each.’

As for the cast member she was closest to, the Scot replied it was Alyssa, who got banished and turned out to be a traitor, as well as Hannah.

‘We were close from the beginning,’ Meryl said of Hannah. ‘I literally followed her around everywhere like a lost puppy.’

Phones were banished during the filming of The Traitors, but Meryl said a crew member kept in touch with their family and friends, and they all received video messages from them once a week.

Meryl said cameras were rolling Monday to Saturdays, from first thing in the morning to late at night, with the team having a day off and resting on Sundays.

She added: ‘So when it came to Sunday, you literally slept the whole day. Like I literally woke up at 12. I’d chill for a little bit and watch movies and stuff in the room.

‘And then I literally went back to sleep at like three and then I woke up again for dinner and then I went back to sleep.’

Meryl revealed she initially found meeting her fellow faithfuls and traitors ‘daunting’ because it was a ‘big group of people with big personalities.’

‘But obviously, they’re the best people of people I’ve ever met in my entire life and we clicked straight away,’ she explained.

So much so that Meryl said they are all still in contact via a group chat called, of course, The Traitors.

She continued: ‘We speak all the time; I’m talking like 24/7. Genuinely 24 hours a day. We always speak; there’s always someone if you’ve got a problem you can write in the chat and then someone will reply back to you and someone will say how they feel.

‘And it’s good because I just feel like it’s good to keep in touch with everyone especially right now as the show’s airing. So we’re all in contact and we’re always speaking and stuff which is good.’

The Traitors continues tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
