Austin Butler pokes fun at Elvis voice change on Saturday Night Live: ‘I’ve always sounded like this’-Stella Akinwumi-Entertainment – Metro
Austin has spoken!
Austin Butler has addressed the ongoing claims that his voice has slipped into Elvis Presley instead of his own.
The 31-year-old actor played the King of Rock and Roll in Baz Luhrmann’s dazzling biopic, released earlier this year.
Butler’s portrayal of the late Hound Dog singer was met with critical acclaim, and the film received a 12-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival 2022.
However, many fans have speculated what the Aliens in the Attic star sounds like after believing he adopted Elvis’ mannerisms.
During the latest Saturday Night Live , Butler poked fun at the accusations and told the crowd: ‘There’s people out there who say that ever since I played Elvis my voice has changed.
‘That it got deeper, more Elvis-y. But that’s not true. I’ve always sounded like this, and I can prove it.’

Clapping back at his critics, the clip later showed the actor promoting the Carrie Diaries in a high-pitched voice.
Butler recently revealed that his commitment to chanelling Elvis resulted in him not seeing his family for a long period of time
‘During Elvis, I didn’t see my family for about three years. I was off in New York prepping with Baz, and then I went to Australia,’ he explained while in conversation with Janelle Monae for Variety’s Actors on Actors series.
‘I had months where I wouldn’t talk to anybody. And when I did, the only thing I was ever thinking about was Elvis. I was speaking in his voice the whole time.’
Butler also shared how the coronavirus pandemic altered the production schedule and meant that he and Luhrmann had to find ‘subtle ways’ to represent the music icon ageing.

He said: ‘Initially, Baz said we could film it in sequence. So I thought, “Well, OK, I can take a break and I can gain the weight.” But then with Covid, the whole schedule got turned upside down.’
Presley’s real-life family had nothing but praise for Butler’s performance, with his daughter, Lisa-Marie saying: ‘Let me tell you that it is nothing short of spectacular.
‘Absolutely exquisite. Austin Butler channelled and embodied my father’s heart & soul beautifully.’
