Craig David was so devastated after an early break-up that he struggled to be ‘vulnerable’ again for the next two decades.

The 7 Days singer has always kept his dating life away from the spotlight and has barely been linked to other celebrities over the years.

However, it seems Craig, 41, wasn’t hiding a secret partner all this time but rather, struggled to build a serious relationship after going through heartbreak in his teenage years.

Opening up about his personal life, the musician recalled being 15 or 16 when he enjoyed a two-week ‘whirlwind’ romance with a ‘girl who [he] was so into’.

Unfortunately for Craig, their love ‘went south and ultimately we broke up’.

‘My heart just closed down – I didn’t know what I had done wrong. That set the tone for the next 20 or so years,’ he told The Mirror

‘I’d never be that vulnerable again.’

Craig admitted there have been some women who ‘really tried to break down my barriers and get to my heart’, but that the ‘whole thing was barricaded with steel gates’.

The Fill Me In hitmaker added that it still ‘pains [him] to this day’ but that he’s worked on himself and now ‘understands self-love’ which means he’s open and ready for love and a relationship.

Craig’s long-running feud with Keith Lemon has been in headlines recently (Picture: Getty Images)

In recent weeks, Craig has hit headlines amid his ongoing and lengthy feud with comedian Keith Lemon, who famously used to impersonate the singer in his controversial sketch show Bo’ Selecta!.

The Rewind singer has been open about the impact the caricature, which saw Keith dress up in blackface, had on his mental health and even his career.

Keith, real name Leigh Francis, apologised in 2020 but Craig previously said he felt it was ‘insincere’.

In response, the comedian suggested Craig ‘move on’ from the controversy but the singer explained on Elizabeth Day’s How To Fail podcast that the whole ordeal reminded him of being bullied when he was a youngster, stating: ‘I couldn’t understand where the point of bullying was so focused in on me. It was just cheap shots all the time.’
