The release of His Dark Materials season 3 on the BBC marks an emotional end to a whirlwind journey, as viewers discover what becomes of Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen) and Will Parry (Amir Wilson) as they continue to embark on their adventure across worlds.

Before fans watch the new episodes, and book readers find out just how faithful the final outing is to author Philip Pullman’s source material, they might want a reminder of what happened at the end of season 2.

The show’s cast has brought this fantastical story to life in spectacular fashion, with Ruth Wilson returning as Mrs Coulter, James McAvoy as Lord Asriel Belacqua and Simone Kirby as the ever-curious physicist Dr Mary Malone.

So before you tune into season three on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, what happened at the end of the second series?

Here’s what you need to know.

What happened at the end of His Dark Materials season 2?

The end of His Dark Materials season two sent several of the main characters in all sorts of directions, as tension continued to brew ahead of Lord Asriel’s war against the Authority.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Lyra’s character is that unbeknownst to many, she’s the subject of a prophecy that could have huge implications on the world as they know it.

As Mrs Coulter finds out from a witch called Lena Feldt who she tortures in the city of Cittàgazze, where Lyra and Will first met, the young girl is believed to be the second ‘Eve’, just like the one from the biblical tale of Adam and Eve.

The ruling authority of Lyra’s world, the Magisterium, frets over what impact she could have as the new ‘Eve’, fearing the second fall of man and supposed descent into sin.

Mrs Coulter’s cruelty towards the witch also allows her to discover where Lyra is, and she heads off in search of her daughter.

The series ends with Mrs Coulter abducting Lyra and placing her unconscious in a trunk, presumably having drugged the young girl to keep her that way despite promising to keep her safe from other dangerous forces.

Dr Mary Malone (Simone Kirby), the physicist who Lyra met in season two, is in Cittàgazze, having made her way there in search of Lyra, where she’s protected by Angels, meaning that the evil creatures known as Spectres are unable to harm her.

Meanwhile, after years apart, Will has an emotional reunion with his father Colonel John Parry (Andrew Scott), who adopted the moniker Stanislaus Grumman in Lyra’s world.

John Parry urges his son to take the subtle knife – a weapon also known as Æsahættr – to Lord Asriel to help him in the fight against the Authority, given Will is now the knife bearer.

However, their reunion is cut cruelly short when John Parry is shot and killed, before Will sets off to find Lyra, only to discover that she’s disappeared thanks to Mrs Coulter.

Season two saw the devastating death of beloved character Lee Scoresby (Lin-Manuel Miranda), the charismatic aeronaut who befriended Lyra in the first season.

While Lee calls on witch Serafina Pekkala for help, he dies before she’s able to come to his aid.

The ending of the second season also teased greater significance for the Land of the Dead in the post-credits scene, following the death of Lyra’s best friend Roger (Lewin Lloyd) in season one.

His Dark Materials season 3 premieres tonight at 7pm on BBC One and will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
