It has certainly made a splash – taking $135million (£111million) at the US box office in its first weekend. But film bosses beind Avatar: The Way of Water may still be feeling a little blue.
The special effects-laden sequel was ‘very f***ing expensive’ to make, in the words of its director James Cameron.
And reports say it needs to gross $2billion to break even, which only five films including the first Avatar have ever done.
The new movie also launched in the UK this weekend but figures were yet to be published. Its US debut was the sixth best on record for December, behind the likes of Spiderman: No Way Home.
The film stars Kate Winslet as Ronal, wife of tribe leader Tonowari, plus Sigourney Weaver, 73, as 14-year-old Kiri.

Weaver was a scientist in the original but Matt Damon turned it down despite an offer of ten per cent of the profits. Cameron, 68, recently joked Damon can have a role in a future sequel but ‘he doesn’t get ten per cent, f*** that’.
