Winning The Traitors is the big dream for all the contestants, right? Well, not so much for Amos Ogunkoya.

Amos certainly had a unique experience on Claudia Winkleman’s thrilling gameshow, as the London-based GP was initially removed from the game before it even started in a shocking twist.

However, much to viewers’ delight, he and Kieran Tompsett ended up re-entering and in with a chance of securing the £120,000 prize.

But for Amos, as the game progressed and emotions became increasingly heightened, he realised he ‘wouldn’t have been able to live with myself’ if he won.

In conversation with Metro.co.uk, he admitted that going back into the game was somewhat of an ‘advantage’ since it allowed him to assess situations with fresh pair of eyes, whereas everyone else was so invested.

‘When I came back, I kinda felt like it was a disadvantage but, looking back, it was probably an advantage.’

He continued: ‘By the time I came back, everyone was quite emotional and I came back wondering why. I think our exile, that’s what I’m calling it, started the game for everyone. Everyone was like, “Oh this is gonna be fun, let’s see what happens,” then suddenly, they realised it wasn’t and we had to enjoy every moment like it’s the last.’

Amos kept in his mind that the show was ‘just a game’, saying he wasn’t in as ‘deep’ as the others who would get very emotional, a lightbulb moment he had following Faithful Rayan Rachedi’s banishment.

‘Rayan’s banishment really affected me. Until that point, I didn’t know why people were getting so upset, but I realised then when I accused him and he was really, really upset, I thought to myself, “It’s not worth making people this upset in a game. I’m ok to lose this game.”

However, the London-based doctor couldn’t understand why everyone was so emotional (Picture: BBC)

Explaining that he ‘didn’t care’ who the Traitors were, he said his job as a doctor helped him remove the emotion from it all.

‘I got to see what my values are. It gave me perspective of what’s important and what’s not and, in that situation, I knew winning wasn’t that important.’

What was important to Amos, though, were the friendships he made, like with 72-year-old retiree Andrea, with whom he’s now ‘unbelievably close.’

‘I’ve left with lifelong friends, I went to visit Andrea and I helped with her horses, I went to Belgium. It feels like I’ve spent more time with them and I wouldn’t have had that if I didn’t have this experience. I wouldn’t change anything. We have this bond and the money isn’t worth the friendships. I now have friends that I can rely on.’

Besides, if he were to scoop the cash, Amos would’ve had to go against everything he knew.

‘I probably wouldn’t have been able to live with myself,’ he confessed, adding that he would’ve given the prize money to a mental health or sickle cell charity.

‘To win that game, I would have to compromise my principals and I would only ever do it if there was a purpose that I felt was really good.

‘I wouldn’t buy a Lamborghini. I would help people out.’

The Traitors is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
