Lee Mack made a cheeky joke about Prince Edward during Tuesday’s Royal Variety Performance.

The 54-year-old comedian hosted the annual event at the Royal Albert Hall, attended by Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

In his opening speech, Lee began: ‘I’ve got three kids. The youngest is the naughtiest. It’s always the youngest that’s the trickiest, isn’t it?’

‘No disrespect’ he added to Edward, who is Queen Elizabeth’s youngest of four children.

The royals took the joke well, as the camera cut to them both laughing.

Lee continued: ‘There goes the knighthood!

‘Wouldn’t work for me, anyway. Sir Lee – just sounds like I’m in a bad mood.’

Before the cheeky quip, the host made a risqué joke about late Prince Philip.

‘I’ve been told all about the royal etiquette and protocols,’ he said.

‘I don’t want to make the same mistake I made on my first performance in 2002, apparently when meeting royalty, it’s a bow the head just at the neck, you never offer your hand until you’ve been offered it by them.

‘And the number one rule, which I got wrong last time, never kiss them on the lips.

‘Honestly I thought Prince Philip was going to punch my lights out!’

Ahead of the show, Lee went back to his roots to practice, with some gigs at his local comedy club.

Reflecting on his preparation, he said: ‘Whenever I’m doing a tour or a new stand-up show I always go along to my local comedy club and try out loads of nights there, but of course this is a bit different.

‘So, I’ve been to my local comedy club and I literally said to them, ‘This is the Royal Albert Hall, you are a member of the Royal Family and you are in the Royal Box”.

‘I pointed at people in the audience and gave them all a job and then performed like it was the Royal Variety Performance and tried some things out. It’s the first time I’ve ever turned up at a gig in my suit and a dicky bow.’

The Royal Variety Performance is available to watch on ITVX.
