Margot Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean remake with a female-led cast may still go ahead, a producer has said.
The Neighbors star turned Hollywood royalty, 32, was revealed in 2020 to be the leading lady in the project, set to be written by Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson.
Reports had indicated Disney was in the early development stages of Margot’s new flick, based on the pheonemenally successful franchise starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.
However fans’ hopes were dashed when, just weeks ago, actress Margot suggests the film was dead in the water, telling Vanity Fair Disney had jumped ship.
She said: ‘We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool.
‘But I guess they don’t want to do it.’
However Jerry Bruckheimer, who was signed on as a producer on the project, has now insisted the project is not dead, but very much ‘alive.’

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Jerry, 79, suggested the project is ‘alive for me, it’s alive for Disney.’
He said the team was developing two Pirates movies – ‘one with Margot Robbie and one with younger cast.’
Jerry explained: ‘The Margot Robbie one needs a little more work. The younger cast one is close. Hopefully we’ll get both of them.’

The producer, who worked on all five previous Pirates movies, insisted: ‘We believe we’ll get it made. It’s a very strong story.’
Chatting to The Sunday Times in May of this year, Jerry confirmed both projects were in development and denied any return of Johnny and his infamous Captain Jack character.
He said: ‘Yes. We’re talking to Margot Robbie. We are developing two Pirates scripts — one with her, one without.’

It was reported back in March 2020 that Margot and Birds of Prey writer Christina were teaming up once again for the female-fronted movie for Disney.
It was suggested that the film would feature a wholly original story with new characters under the Pirates moniker.
