Sam Smith has spoken candidly about struggling with fame, admitting becoming a well-known figure has been ‘one of the biggest struggles’ of their life.
Smith explained that stardom has had a huge impact on their relationships but acknowledging their privilege, also expressed caution about seeming ungrateful.
The Unholy hit-maker explained: ‘Relationships change and family can change. Money can change that, and fame. Fame is probably the biggest issue I have had in my life.’
Speaking on BBC Radio 2’s First and Last podcast, Smith continued: ‘[Fame] is this horrible one as you can’t moan about it [because] I know I am very, very lucky to be in my position, but life does get turned on its head.’
They elaborated: ‘You have to find a new way to talk to people you love and you lose people you love, which is the hardest part.
‘I was at my lowest in my life writing my third album. I was coming to terms with gender stuff. I felt like I had to live up to this character of Sam Smith.’

Smith’s brave and vulnerable comments come weeks before the release of their brand-spanking new album, Gloria, in early 2023.
Teasing the album, Smith previously said: ‘Filthy golden goose time. Oh you’ll see on tour… I mean there’s no gooses on tour actually…[Expect] fun. Absolute fun. It was my task to write an album that was full of joy and I think I did it. And so it’s fun, it’s sexy, raunchy, honest. Yeah, I’m proud of it.’
Smith recently dropped the first track off Gloria, certified banger Unholy, which rocketed straight to number one.
Earlier this month, Smith was even on hand to give a powerful performance at the White House when US President Joe Biden signed a bill protecting same-sex marriage.
Smith celebrated the bill – which ensures federal protections and recognition for same-sex and interracial marriages in the US – by delivering an emotional performance of their hit track Stay With Me.

Sam, who is non-binary, performed for a crowd of both Republicans and Democrats, with the bill having been supported by members of both sides, and was accompanied by backing singers and a keyboardist. Needless to say, they absolutely smashed it.
It’s been more than a decade since the world-famous chart-topper burst onto the scene back in 2012 with hits Latch with Disclosure and La La La with Naughty Boy, and we’re hoping for at least another decade of hits.
