It’s the most wonderful time of the year: when people share the theory that Elvis Presley made a cameo in Home Alone.

As punters rewatch the Christmas classic for the billionth time, chatters have emerged on social media once more suggesting the late King of Rock and Roll appears in the background of one of the scenes.

With the countdown to the big day only a couple days away, Twitter is awash with feverish fans who think a bearded man waiting at the airport, as Catherine O’Hara’s Kate frets over getting back to Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin, is someone who died in the 70s.

Yep.

But, honestly, we do love a good showbiz conspiracy, don’t we?

You *could* say this unidentified man’s uncanny resemblance to the late Presley sure is existent, despite the crooner dying 13 years before the 1990 film was released.

Even though the conversation has been cracking around for a while, it’s reignited this month with one writing online: ‘Two different legends in the background: John Candy and ‘Elvis Presley. Yep, Elvis secretly faked his own passing and eventually snuck into the filming of Home Alone, with nobody ever noticing… right!’

Another mused: ‘There’s only one conspiracy theory I believe in and it’s that the actor who stood behind Kevin’s mother in the Home Alone airport scene is Elvis Presley.’

‘Tis not a new theory, and we asked the crew of the film for its 30th anniversary what they thought about the long-running conspiracy.

Exec producer Tarquin Gotch was left baffled by the whole thing, telling us: ‘I have no idea what motivated that, he doesn’t look anything like Elvis!

‘It’s an absolutely no! If it is Elvis, it looks like Elvis who has been on heroin for a few years.’

Set decorator Daniel Clancy was also in agreement, but cinematographer Julio Macat stated that there is a possibility that the late singer’s presence was caught on camera.

Nothing anyone can say to me can ever convince me that this dude in the background of a shot in Home Alone II isn’t Elvis pic.twitter.com/6isMMwsY2B

Addressing the theories, he confessed it wasn’t the first time something similar has been captured on one of his cameras.

‘Well if he was, it was not planned,’ he joked. ‘As far as that, I would not discard the Elvis theory. I have to tell you, I’m a cinematographer, and I’ve shot a lot of stuff. I once shot some infrared film for a movie called Blind Dating, with Chris Pine.

‘So I was filming infrared film in this park, and this figure of a boy that was dressed in 1800s clothing photographed in the shot. And I can assure you with 100% accuracy that there was nobody there, because when I did the shot, I wanted the serenity of nothing in the shot, I just wanted it to be a plain thing, nobody was there.

‘I shoot it with infrared film, and there’s a kid running across, dressed in this Victorian clothing running across the park. And to this day I can’t tell you…

‘If Elvis was in that shot in the background, I would not discard it, I would not discard that possibility. If I shot that shot with infrared film, he is probably there.’

We’ll be keeping a closer eye on Julio’s films in future.
