Rian Johnson has addressed speculation that he based a character of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery on Elon Musk.

The tech giant has hardly been out of the headlines following his takeover of Twitter, and his many controversial changes on the social media platform.

Many have questioned whether the sequel, and Edward Norton’s character, Miles Bron, is a savage takedown of the billionaire businessman.

Viewers have even jokingly suggested that discussions of the film will be banned on the social platform.

During a new interview, the director touched on the rumors when discussing the upcoming sequel, insisting it was simply an ‘accident’.

When it was suggested that he could focus his third outing of Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) on the ‘downfall of Twitter’, he laughed: ‘Didn’t I just do that?’

‘It’s so weird,’ he told Wired of the timing. ‘It’s very bizarre. I hope there isn’t some secret marketing department at Netflix that’s funding this Twitter takeover.

‘There’s a lot of general stuff about that sort of species of tech billionaire that went directly into it. But obviously, it has almost a weird relevance in exactly the current moment.

‘A friend of mine said, “Man, that feels like it was written this afternoon.” And that’s just sort of a horrible, horrible accident, you know?’

Knives Out landed on Netflix last week, after a brief cinema release, and follows tech billionaire Miles Bron who invites his powerful group of friends to his remote island.

When someone turns up dead, all eyes are on who could have committed murder, with Benoit ready to crack the case.

Daniel led a stellar cast alongside Edward, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn and Leslie Odom Jr, with some very famous cameos also popping up.

Dame Angela Lansbury appeared in a very brief cameo – filmed long before her death in October – a moment that meant the world to Rian.

‘She’s a hero in so many ways,’ he told Metro.co.uk.

‘Obviously she has a connection to the mystery genre but you look at the entirety of her life, her collaboration with Stephen Sondheim on his musicals – which also, him having a cameo in this movie meant a lot to us – it’s extraordinary.

‘I’m also just happy I got to meet her and got to tell her what her work meant to me.’

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is available to stream on Netflix.
