The race for Christmas number one is over for another year, with LadBaby claiming a record-breaking fifth chart-topper over the festive season.

But next year we may see an unlikely pair teaming up to try and steal the top spot in the form of Sir Cliff Richard and Stormzy.

The 82-year-old has refused to rule out creating a new Christmas song with Stormzy, 29, after the rapper beat him to number one in the album charts earlier this month.

After an epic battle, Stormzy’s third album This Is What I Mean reigned supreme over Christmas With Cliff – the crooner’s third Christmas album and 46th over all.

Speaking to to Iain Dale on his All Talk podcast about their battle, Sir Cliff said: ‘My album came in at two in the charts that covers Spotify and all those things but I came in at No1 on the physical chart.

‘I’d rather be No1 but I keep saying to people, at least I’m going up – Stormzy at one, there’s only one way for him to go.’

When asked if he would consider collaborating with Stormzy, he said: ‘Why not?’

During their chart battle, Sir Cliff teased that his record was ‘better’ than Stormzy’s – and admitted he hadn’t heard of him before he started promoting the album.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Sir Cliff said: ‘If you wanna sell records, between October and December is the place to do it.

‘So he’s doing it, and I’m doing it, but I have never got through easily. It’s always been competition with someone else, and if you’ve got the better record, then you’ve got it.

‘This is Stormzy’s album, I was looking at this. There are 12 tracks on his album. My album has 13 tracks!’

Stormzy ultimately beat Sir Cliff in the battle, scoring his third number one album.
