It may still be available to watch in the cinema, but fans were expecting the musical version of Roald Dahl’s Matilda to hit Netflix on Christmas Day.

While that is the case for international versions of the streaming giant, UK viewers are having to wait a little bit (or actually, much) longer.

The cast of the highly anticipated film includes Emma Thompson as headteacher Miss Agatha Trunchbull and newcomer Alisha Weir as Matilda Wormwood.

Fans in the UK and Ireland have been treated to an exclusive cinema release of the highly anticipated film, which hit the big screen on November 25, while its theatrical debut in the US followed on December 9.

Viewers who were hoping to watch the hit as they opened their presents on Christmas Day were left disappointed when they realised that while it had hit Netflix globally, it is not yet available in the UK and Ireland.

One complained: ‘@NetflixUK why did you advertise Matilda The Musical being available on Christmas Day to a UK market, when it isn’t available? It’s a massive disappointment.’

‘Matilda being available on Netflix all over the world except the UK and Ireland is honestly one of the biggest jokes of all time,’ another mused.

When is Matilda released on Netflix?

A date for Matilda the Musical’s release to Netflix is yet to be announced, but it has been confirmed it will land on Netflix UK and Ireland in summer 2023.

For now, the only way for viewers to watch Matilda the Musical is in cinemas.

Who is in the cast of Matilda the Musical?

Newcomer Alisha Weir stars as the titular character Matilda Wormwood, Captain Marvel star Lashana Lynch stars as Miss Jennifer Honey, while Nanny McPhee and Love Actually’s Emma Thompson stars as the terrifying headteacher Miss Agatha Trunchbull.

Line of Duty star Stephen Graham portrays Matilda’s dad Harry, while Andrea Riseborough stars as his wife Mrs Wormwood and comedian Sindhu Vee plays librarian Mrs Phelps.

But the children are the main stars of the show, with Charlie Hodson-Prior playing Bruce Bogtrotter, Rei Yamauchi Fulker as Lavender, Meesha Garbett as Hortensia and Winter Jarrett-Glasspool as Amanda Thripp.
