Jameela Jamil has revealed the reality of living with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

The actress is very open when it comes to both physical and mental health, sharing the ups and downs with her followers to raise awareness.

Now, Jameela, 36, has shown off her ‘elastic’ skin as a result of her rare condition, which causes very flexible joints, and stretchy and fragile skin.

Sharing a video with her 3.7million followers, the TV presenter pulled at her skin to show just how far it stretches while explaining how ‘serious’ the condition is.

‘Hi, look at this, Jesus Christ, this is not an app or filter,’ Jameela began. ‘It’s my face, look at how elastic that is.’

She shared: ‘The reason it’s so elastic is because I have EDS, I have HEDS three, the H because I’m so hyper mobile.

‘The joints, nothing bends the right way, everything bends the wrong way. I want to talk about it despite the fact people like to make fun of me because of my health.

‘It’s a serious condition and affects every part of your body and your mind and it’s a dangerous thing to have if you don’t know you have it.’

The Good Place star went on to explain that she doesn’t ‘drink, smoke, or do drugs’ due to how her condition affects ‘bruising, bleeding, healing, and if you want to have a baby.’

EDS also causes very flexible joints (Picture: Instagram)

‘I’m worried at the fact I’m disadvantaged with my health, it means you dislocate, your teeth are harder to work on, you struggle with migraines, random allergies,’ she detailed.

Jameela then encouraged her followers to have awareness of EDS.

‘I’m not a doctor but that’s why I want you to go to a doctor… if you’re struggling with your joints and accidents all the time, please look at the symptoms,’ she urged.

‘It really can save your life. The people who have it really look well. I love you, I’m with you, go get checked!’

Jameela added an apology in her Instagram caption for not talking about EDS more often, stating: ‘The internet made fun of me over my health problems and it made me suicidal for a while.’

But, she’s determined to continue the conversation, writing: ‘I’m done not talking to the people who MATTER about this hugely important subject’.

Symptoms of Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS)

There are several types of EDS, which are caused by faults in certain genes that make connective tissue weaker.

However, they may share some symptoms. These include:

an increased range of joint movement (joint hyper-mobility)
stretchy skin
fragile skin that breaks or bruises easily

EDS can affect people in different ways. For some, the condition is relatively mild, while for others their symptoms can be disabling.

According to the NHS, Ehlers-Danlos syndromes are a group of rare inherited conditions that affect connective tissue.

Connective tissues provide support in skin, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, internal organs and bones.

There are 13 types of EDS, most of which are rare, while hypermobile EDS (hEDS) is the most common type.

Other types of EDS include classical EDS, vascular EDS and kyphoscoliotic EDS.
