Janey Godley has shared a powerful photo of her husband shaving her hair as she underwent her first chemo sessions.

The 61-year-old Scottish comedian has battled ovarian cancer for the past year, with the disease returning after she was initially given the all-clear in June.

On New Year’s Eve she re-posted her ‘favourite’ picture of the year – which she originally shared in February – with her husband Sean Storrie.

In the emotional black and white snap, Janey can be seen with her partner’s hands on her head, cradling it as he uses an electric razor.

She had decided to shave off her long locks before losing them due to side effects of chemotherapy.

Re-posting the photograph, she wrote: ‘My fav photo of 2022, my husband shaving the remains of my hair through the first chemo sessions. We both cried. He was so gentle’.

Just before Christmas, Janey was flooded with messages of support after sharing her devastation at undergoing cancer treatment in the build-up to Christmas.

She found herself in tears at her situation after hearing a Christmas song from her childhood on the chemo ward, and took to Twitter to share how she was feeling.

She wrote: ‘Someone is playing “White Christmas” on the chemo ward and now I am sitting here crying.

‘Of all the places I thought I would be at this time of year, this isn’t one of them. Facing my life shortened by ovarian cancer and having all these nostalgic memories of Christmas past.’

She added: ‘Sending love to everyone facing devastating health conditions.’

She was inundated with messages of love and support, with one person writing: ‘So sorry Janey, sending you love & strength.’

Meanwhile, fellow stand-up Rory Bremner added: ‘Sending you love & strength. You’re amazing Janey.’

She seemed heartened by the support, retweeting several of them before later posing beside a Christmas tree with a mask as she wrote: ‘Chemo done I am off home for Christmas’.

Janaye received her diagnosis of stage three ovarian cancer in November 2021 and has since undergone chemotherapy treatment and a full hysterectomy.

She shared the news of the cancer returning earlier this month, confirming she was still determined to go on tour early in the New Year.

However she added her next tour will likely be the last time she is able to perform live, with the cancer returning just months after a scan in June showing her to be cancer-free.

She explained at the time: ‘I am determined to get back on stage. I’ve been a kind of die on your feet, know your knees [sic] type of person.

‘I’m looking forward to the tour, I think it’s fair and honest to say it might be the last time you see me live on stage. I’m hoping it’s not, but I think it’s a fair estimation.’
