Davina McCall has been begging ITV for the opportunity to host a middle-aged Love Island spin-off.

The dating reality series, which is set to return to our screens in a matter of days, has seen the likes of Gemma Owen and Davide Sanclimenti looking for love before being plummeted into fame.

But, Davina has been calling on producers to create a spin-off with ‘interesting people’ who have ‘lived a life’.

Speaking to Steven Bartlett on his podcast The Diary of a CEO, the former Big Brother host began: ‘So I always think, just start walking in that direction, and something else will come along but never just sit down and wait. I’ve never sat down and thought, I’m just going to stay here and wait for something to happen to me.’

The 55-year-old continued: ‘I’ve got no embarrassment or shame about emailing a TV company or head of a TV company, and going, “Have you thought about this? What about this? Can I present that if it happens? Can I do this?”

‘I’m literally begging ITV to let me present mid-life Love Island. I could fill a villa in Love Island with the best back stories you have ever heard in your life.’

She enthusiastically added: ‘They’ve lived a life! They’re widows, they’re people who have been through horrific divorces, they’re people who have split up with somebody and decided they want to try to go out with somebody the same sex as them.

‘They’re interesting people! I’d watch that show.’

When probed on what ITV replied to her about her idea, she said: ‘They said, “We’re looking at something else that is quite similar, we might consider you for that.”

‘Well if I hadn’t sent them that email in the first place, they wouldn’t have thought about me for the other show, maybe.

‘You’ve got to make opportunities happen, they never just come to you. Keep walking.’

She added: ‘Don’t sit and wait for the path to be laid because it’ll never come to you.’

Last summer, it had been reported that ITV were considering a Love Island spin-off featuring singletons over 40.

Typically, the reality dating programme features contestants between the age of 18 and their late 20s, with few stars from past series’ being over the age of 30, like Marcel Somerville in series three and Paul Knops in series four, who were both 31 when they entered the villa.

But rumours have circulated around Love Island bosses reportedly sending ‘mums and dads’ into the villa, and that’s not the only diverse twist. Apparently, the spin-off will feature stars with ‘normal bodies’.

At the time, Metro.co.uk understood that ITV had not yet commissioned the spin-off.

Love Island returns Monday, January 16 at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
