My most anticipated video games of 2023 – Reader’s Feature-GameCentral-Entertainment – Metro

A reader examines the release schedules for 2023 and looks forward to the likes of Spider-Man 2 and Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom.

2022 was a good year for gaming but 2023 could be even better. Here’s my most anticipated games of the next year.

11. Dead Island 2

I think I’m interested in this game more out of a curiosity to see how it reviews. From what I gather, everyone had pretty much assumed it was cancelled years ago, before it resurfaced. Depending on the reviews it could be a good bit of brainless zombie killing fun and sure fire contender for the bargain bin by the end of the year.

10. Forspoken

I wasn’t immediately convinced about the recent demo that was released, however my biggest complaint was that I had issues with the brightness settings and the game looking either muddy or way too bright, no matter how much I fiddled with the settings. Stil,l I’m usually a fan of Sony exclusive third person games, so could be convinced depending on the reviews. [The game is a PlayStation 5 timed exclusive, but it has nothing to do with Sony – GC]

9. Dead Space

I never played the original but do enjoy third person action games and know this game is held in high esteem. My main barrier to playing this is that I’m a bit of a wuss when it comes to horror games. Might be one to try on Game Pass, when it becomes available on EA Play.

8. SEASON: A Letter To The Future

I don’t really know much about this game, as I haven’t had chance to try the demo yet. But I like the art style and it looks intriguing.

7. Alan Wake 2

I played a little of the remake last year but wasn’t overly impressed. However, Control was one of the best games I’ve ever played. I’m hoping, therefore, that the Alan Wake sequel will be a step up in quality compared to the first game. That’s if it actually comes out in 2023, since we’ve actually yet to see any footage.

6. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

I didn’t play that much of the first game, mainly due to the difficulty. However, after playing Elden Ring this year I think I might be up to the challenge. I plan to give the first game another try and will eagerly see how the sequel is received. Might be another game to try when it comes to Game Pass.

5. Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League

So far I haven’t been entirely sold on this game. My fears is it might be a live service type game, that doesn’t have enough single-player content. Having said that, I am a big fan of the Batman: Arkham series, so I hope that perhaps Rocksteady can create another classic.

4. Resident Evil 4

I’m old enough to remember the original Resident Evil 4 (and even the original Resident Evil 1) but never played it. I’m a wuss with horror games but make an exception for the Resident Evil games and have played the last two mainline entries and the remakes of 2 and 3. I know Resident Evil 4 is regarded as one of the best, if not the best, in the franchise. Let’s hope the remake can live up to the hype and reaches the benchmark set by the excellent Resident Evil 2 remake.

3. Hogwarts Legacy

Up until recently licensed games were usually pretty poor but recent games such as Lego Star Wars, Spider-Man, and the Batman: Arkham series have bucked that trend. Here’s hoping that Hogwarts Legacy can be a success. From the footage so far it looks like it will be good.

I was tempted to wait for the Switch version, as playing it in bed would be great, but since we haven’t seen any footage I can only assume it will look ugly as sin, so will probably get the PlayStation 5 version.

An open world game where you get to be a wizard and explore Victorian era Hogwarts and Hogsmeade? The teenage me says ‘Yes, please!’ As does the 38 manchild version of me.

2. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

We haven’t really seen any footage yet but that doesn’t matter. The first Spider-Man game was one of my favourite games of the last generation and in my opinion Miles Morales was even better.

Unless I’m mistaken this will be the first big budget Sony exclusive game that is only playable on the PlayStation 5 so I can’t wait to see how they utilise the power of the console. My only slight reservation is whether a third game set in New York will feel a little too overfamiliar.

1. The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

My most anticipated game of 2023. It’s only a few months away and we still don’t really know what it’s going to be like. I know some Zelda fans weren’t entirely sold on Breath Of The Wild straying away from the formula of other games but personally it’s probably my favourite game of all time, whereas I haven’t clicked as much with other Zelda games.

I know some fans voiced frustration at the lack of dungeons in Breath Of The Wild. Personally I’m all for dungeons returning in the new game but I hope it doesn’t come at the expense of shrines from the last game, which I really enjoyed.

I hope we see some new footage soon and look forward to the GameCentral review. Whatever the outcome this will be a day one purchase.
