Hollywood came out in their finest for the star-studded 80th Golden Globes this year.

It was the first Golden Globe ceremony to be televised since 2021, after last year’s ceremony was scaled back after criticism towards the lack of diversity in their nominations.

However 2023 saw a return to form for the soiree, with major wins for the likes of Abbott Elementary, Angela Bassett (who made history with her win) and The Fabelmans.

The Golden Globes don’t just honour the best of TV and film, they kick off awards season – the first major awards show followed in quick succession by the likes of the BAFTAs, GRAMMYs and, finally, the Oscars.

Still lauded as one of the most coveted awards, the Oscars – or the Academy Awards, as they’re officially called – will take place on March 12 this year. But when are the nominations for the ceremony announced?

When are the Oscar nominations announced?

The 2023 Academy Award nominees will be announced on Tuesday, January 24.

Details about the nominations stream have yet to be confirmed, but there’s usually a live stream presented by notable figures in the industry.

Last year, viewers were able to follow the action live in the UK through a stream on the Academy’s official Twitter account.

It was presented by the late Leslie Jordan and Tracee Ellis Ross.

What films are favourite to win an award?

While there’s always room for surprises, the winners at the Golden Globe awards give a rough idea of what should get a nom from the Academy.

Among the favourites to earn nominations across acting, directing and screenplay categories this year are Top Gun: Maverick, TÁR, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Elvis, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and The Banshees of Inisherin.

Bookies already have picked their top guesses for the main categories.

Everything Everywhere All At Once is the second favourite, with odds of 6/4 and Irish comedy The Banshees of Inisherin – which claimed Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) at the Golden Globes – is third favourite with odds of 4/1.

When are the Oscars 2023?

The 2023 Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 12.

They’ll be broadcast live from the Ovation Hollywood theater in Los Angeles, California. Broadcast details haven’t been confirmed just yet, but Sky Movies and NOW have shown the ceremony live and broadcast highlights in the days afterwards in previous years.
