Millie Gibson has been seen on the set of Doctor Who for the first time, and it looks like the new companion is getting thrown straight into the thick of the action.

In November last year, it was announced that the actor, who previously played Kelly Neelan on Coronation Street, would be starring in the BBC series alongside the Fifteenth Doctor, portrayed by Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa.

From the minute it was revealed she’d joined the cast, fans were excited beyond belief to discover what she’ll bring to the beloved sci-fi phenomenon, as it welcomes a new era under returning showrunner Russell T Davies.

Now, we have our first glimpse of Millie’s performance, as the 18-year-old dons her costume as newcomer Ruby Sunday.

While filming for the long-running TV show in Wales, the actor wore a tartan-patterned coat, with red, blue, brown and black stripes.

Her blonde hair was cut to above shoulder-length, while she also wore an orange skirt to complete her wintery look.

At one point in between filming, Millie was seen staying warm in the cold with a dark green coat, blue trousers and a leopard print-patterned hot water bottle, carrying her phone while out of character.

Jemma Redgrave, who was filming with her, was seen holding what would presumably have been a hot drink, while sporting a red and black coat over a green jacket, keeping her colour palette festive.

The 57-year-old actor has a recurring role on Doctor Who as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, the Head of Scientific Research at UNIT, and is set to make a return to the programme.

However, Millie and Jemma weren’t the only ones seen filming, as a group of actors dressed as members of Kate’s international military organisation UNIT were also spotted on the scene.

When it was announced that Jemma was returning to Doctor Who, a statement from the BBC read: ‘UNIT returns! Jemma Redgrave returns as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, and UNIT, the long-running organisation set on defending the Earth, returns in the next series of Doctor Who.’

The announcement also revealed that 1899 star Aneurin Barnard would be joining the cast as the ‘mysterious’ Roger ap Gwilliam.

Could Ruby’s interaction with Kate be the catalyst that leads to her becoming the Doctor’s companion, considering UNIT’s dedication to defending the planet?

When it was announced that Millie would be joining Doctor Who, she said that she was in ‘total disbelief’ and felt ‘beyond honoured’ to have been given the role.

‘It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me,’ she said at the time.

‘And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started.’

Ncuti added: ‘Millie just is the companion. She is full of talent, strength, she has a cheeky sparkle in her eye and is sharp as a razor.

‘From the moment she walked into the room she captured all of our attention with her effervescence and then solidified that attention with the sheer torque of her talent.

‘This adventure is going to be so wild and so fun, I cannot WAIT to sail the universe with Millie!’

Doctor Who returns to the BBC later this year.
