Triumph and tears overcome a toxic history for the Golden Globes-Larushka Ivan-Zadeh-Entertainment – Metro

It was make or break for the Golden Globes – a ceremony that 12 months ago was considered so toxic it couldn’t even be televised after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association – the organisation behind the Globes – was accused of racism and corruption (by accepting gifts and other perks from eager studios).
Yet Hollywood seemed largely in a mood to forgive and the winners, who actually turned up, appeared genuinely thrilled to claim their gongs.
Showbiz survivors were, appropriately, a theme. The night’s golden girl was undoubtedly White Lotus star Jennifer Coolidge, who won best supporting actress in a limited series after decades of bit parts.
Triumphant best actress Michelle Yeoh declared, ‘I’m just gonna stand here and take this all in’, following her four-decade fight as a minority actor in Hollywood.
Her Everything Everywhere All At Once co-star Ke Huy Quan (best supporting actor) dampened eyes with his emotional comeback following child stardom as Short Round in Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom.
This was, of course, directed by Steven Spielberg, who picked up best director and best drama for his memoir The Fabelmans, firmly establishing it as an Oscars forerunner – though black comedy The Banshees Of Inisherin is nipping at its heels.

The fact that Elvis star Austin Butler – who still appeared to be channelling The King – pipped odds-on favourite Brendan Fraser to best actor was something of an upset but it certainly avoided awkwardness: Fraser has accused the Globes’ former president of sexual misconduct and refused to attend the ceremony.
Not the most exciting three hours in history then… but ‘business as usual’ is surely just what the HFPA had ordered.
