WWE legend Shane McMahon received over $820,000 as a performer in 2022 despite only making one in-ring appearance.

In a filing with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) this week, the company noted that the 52-year-old son of Vince McMahon – WWE’s founder who has recently returned as executive chairman amid speculation of a potential sale – received a huge sum for his work.

In the SEC filing, the company says: ‘Shane B. McMahon is the son of Mr. McMahon.

‘In 2022, Shane McMahon was retained as an independent contractor performer by the Company and received an aggregate of approximately $828,000 in connection with such services.’

His sole in-ring appearance came as part of the Royal Rumble in January 2022, in the titular annual bout which sees 30 people battling to throw each other over the top rope and be the last one standing to earn a match for the world championship at WrestleMania.

The eyewatering amount also came despite Shane lasting five minutes and 38 seconds in the ring, having entered at number 28 and making it to the final three.

He was eliminated by eventual winner Brock Lesnar, who also threw out fan favourite Drew McIntyre to set up a Winner Takes All title match with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 38.

The bout was heavily criticised by many fans and critics, although there were some bright moments including guest appearances from Bad Bunny and Jackass legend Johnny Knoxville.

There were reports after the event that Shane was no longer being used by the company on screen, with potential plans involving him allegedly scrapped for WrestleMania.

Meanwhile, the filing comes after it was confirmed Shane’s sister Stephanie McMahon had stepped down from her WWE roles as co-CEO and chair, with her dad Vince back in power as executive chairman days after he returned to the board of directors after his retirement in July 2022 amid an investigation into allegations of misconduct.

In a lengthy statement, she referenced her ‘leave of absence’ around eight months ago before taking up her roles following Vince’s retirement, and said: ‘Our Founder, Vince McMahon, has returned as Executive Chair and is leading an exciting process regarding strategic alternatives.

‘And with [CEO Nick Khan’s] leadership and Paul “Triple H” Levesque as Chief Content Officer, I am confident WWE is in the perfect place to provide unparalleled creative content and drive maximum value for shareholders.’

In a statement, her father Vince expressed his ‘full support for Stephanie’s personal decision’.

This development comes days after Mr. McMahon announced his plans to return to the board to work ‘collaboratively with the Board and management team’ to explore options for the company, including rights deals and a potential sale.
