The Masked Singer UK’s costume designer has revealed that Knitting takes the crown for the heaviest costume this year – and boy does Knitting weigh a whole lot.

Over the past four series of the ITV competition, the outfits worn by the celebrities have continued to wow fans at home, as well as presenter Joel Dommett and judges Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Jonathan Ross.

Some are easier to wear than others… and this year, with contestants including Phoenix, Jellyfish and Rhino, it turns out that the character made to look like a ball of wool may be the most taxing for whoever the famous individual is underneath.

During a recent chat with Metro.co.uk, costume designer Tim Simpson from Plunge Creations offered some insight into how difficult Knitting is to wear, with the design weighing in at an incredible 20kg.

‘It’s probably bordering on about 20 kilos. It’s a heavy thing,’ he shared. ‘I think Knitting was the heaviest.’

What’s more, the amount of wool used to bring the costume to life was ‘just shy of 350 metres’.

For comparison, a football pitch typically measures at approximately 100 metres long. Now that is a lot of wool!

For a costume as outlandish as Knitting, it makes sense that the idea would have come about as a random lightbulb moment in the middle of a costume… and that’s exactly how it happened.

‘Knitting was a casual suggestion by my partner Sarah – business partner and life partner. I think it was over a glass of wine, she said, “Why don’t we do a Knitting?” I was like, “What do you mean, a Knitting, just a bundle of wool?”’ Tim recollected.

‘I sort of sat down and doodled something up and went, “What, like this?” and she went, “Yep, go on, send it off.” So I then sent off that sketch to the producers, and I think Knitting’s fabulous. It’s really heavy.’

Speaking more about how Knitting was actually constructed, Tim continued: ‘So the whole costume is hand-knitted by a woman who knits with her arms instead of knitting needles because it’s so big. It just is a really heavy costume, because there’s that much wool in it.

‘I love the fact that it doesn’t have any eyes. It makes all the other costumes look sort of fiddly, because it is so big and cartoon and simple. I love Knitting, I think that’s a cracking costume, that one.’

However, another costume that is tricky for the singer to wear – which may come as a surprise to viewers – is Rubbish.

Rubbish was constructed so that the costume could actually be wheeled onto stage, which constricted the amount of space that there could be inside for the singer (Picture: ITV)

‘I think weirdly Rubbish was a hard one to wear, simply because you had to be able to crouch down into it and disappear and turn into a rubbish bin, and there’s not much space in there,’ the costume designer stated.

‘You’ve got a bin lid resting on your head, which is not what anybody wants, really, while they’re while they’re performing.’

The Masked Singer UK returns tonight at 7pm on ITV and ITVX.
