DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has spoken out on rumours surrounding who will be the next Superman – and it’s not Euphoria star Jacob Elordi.

Henry Cavill, 39, was axed from the role just days after 56-year-old James publicly denied claims that he disliked the actor.

Speculation has been rife as to who could replace the Witcher star, with 25-year-old Jacob’s name continuously cropping up.

But James has now dispelled the speculation, taking to Twitter to respond to a fan account’s mock-up of Jacob’s head on Superman’s body.

He wrote: ‘My thoughts are no one has been cast as Superman yet. Casting, as is almost always the case with me, will happen after the script is finished or close to finished, and it isn’t.

‘We’ll announce a few things in not too long, but the casting of Superman won’t be one of them.’

He cryptically finished his tweet with a merman emoji, causing fans to believe one of James’ upcoming announcements will be related to Aquaman.

Henry announced he would be returning as Superman last year, even making a cameo in Black Adam.

However, just weeks later, he took to Instagram to share that his return would no longer be happened after a meeting with James and his co-CEO Peter Safran.

My thoughts are no one has been cast as Superman yet. Casting, as is almost always the case with me, will happen after the script is finished or close to finished, and it isn’t. He wrote: ‘I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman.

‘After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life.

‘The changing of the guard is something that happens, I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build.

‘I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.’

James later explained that the ‘initial stages’ of the studio’s new plans for Superman include looking at ‘an earlier part’ of his life.

He explained: ‘Peter [and] I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.

‘Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.
