New PS5 Slim model with detachable drive is not more powerful claims insider-Michael Beckwith-Entertainment – Metro

Would the new model be any cheaper though? How much would Sony also sell the disc drive on its own? (pic: Sony)
Although the rumoured new PS5 model will have near identical hardware, its detachable disc drive won’t work with the current console.
Last year, it was claimed that Sony was finally working on a slimmer version of the PlayStation 5; one that would also feature a detachable disc drive that can be bought separately.
Apparently, the model is already in the hands of people within Sony and could feasibly launch this September. While it won’t be advertised as the PS5 Slim, it’s said to essentially be replacing the current PlayStation 5 model.
However, you won’t need to worry about investing in a second, more powerful console since the latest rumour says that the new model has the exact same specifications as the original.
This is apparently why the new model hasn’t been sent out to developers and remains in Sony’s hands. Developers don’t need to reacquaint themselves with the new hardware, because internally it’s virtually identical.
The one downside, though, is that the purported disc drive won’t be compatible with the current version of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition.
As a reminder, the digital edition lacks a disc drive and thus is cheaper than the standard edition of the console. A separate disc drive attachment would mean digital owners would be able to upgrade and play physical games on their console if they wished.
The original source of the rumour, Tom Henderson, claims his sources believe the disc drive attachment will only work with the newer model, but this could change thanks to software updates.
It’s certainly feasible, as Sony has used software updates in the past to improve the DualSense controller and said in 2020 that it would even improve the console’s internal fan through online updates.
Henderson has proved to be a reliable source of information in the past, but it’s still strange that none of the other usual insiders have corroborated his claims. Although, at the same time, no one’s refuted them either.

Henderson has also recently shared another purported leak, albeit one that comes from the supposedly retired The Snitch, best known for leaking game announcements via needlessly cryptic riddles.
In their private Discord server, The Snitch claims to have heard from a ‘reliable source’ that third party content for PlayStation will be announced very soon.
On its own, that tells us nothing, but it could mean that Sony will hold one of its State of Play presentations in the near future. Microsoft already has a showcase planned for next week so it would make sense for Sony to follow suit.
