Hollywood has rallied around Brendan Fraser after his Critics’ Choice Win on Sunday night.

The 54-year-old took home the best actor trophy for his performance in The Whale, and has been tipped for more success.

After carving out a hugely successful career on the big screen, he took a step back from the spotlight over recent years – and has returned to huge acclaim with his new role, earning multiple standing ovations.

Sarah Michelle Gellar was among those celebrating his latest success, taking to Instagram with a sweet message after an emotional night.

Sharing a photo from Brendan’s speech, she penned: ‘#brenaissance You made us cry last night almost as much as you did in @thewhalemov,’ she penned.

‘And just know that you never need to leave breadcrumbs, Because the Prinze family will always find you.’

The Buffy star’s reference to ‘breadcrumbs’ came after Brendan spoke of his time spent in the ‘wilderness’ and being in a ‘dark place’ while on stage at the ceremony.

‘This movie, The Whale, is about love. It’s about redemption. It’s about finding the light in a dark place,’ he told the star-studded crowd.

‘And I’m so lucky to have worked with an ensemble that is incredible.

‘I was in the wilderness and probably should have left the trail of breadcrumbs.’

‘But you found me, and like all the best directors you merely just showed me where I needed to be,’ he added, directing his message to filmmaker Darren Aronofsky.

In The Whale, Brendan portrays a reclusive man trying to repair his relationship with his estranged teenage daughter (Sadie Sink).

‘That’s really all I can tell you…The wardrobe and costume was extensive, seamless, cumbersome. This is certainly far removed from anything I’ve ever done but not to be coy…

‘I do know it’s going to make a lasting impression.’
