Susanna Reid has expressed pure revulsion at PC David Carrick, a serving Metropolitan Police officer who is believed to be one of the worst sex offenders in modern history after admitting 24 counts of rape against 12 women over a 17-year period.

Carrick, nicknamed ‘Bastard Dave’, pleaded guilty to a total of 49 offences that took place between 2003 and 2020.

His horrific crimes were among the main talking points on Tuesday’s Good Morning Britain, with Reid shaken by his mugshot appearing on the screen.

Discussing the headlines, she said it was ‘disgusting’ and ‘shocking’ that Carrick was able to police for so many years.

Co-presenter Ed Balls agreed, saying Carrick’s crimes were ‘beyond belief’. ‘I thought I was quite hardened to things turning out bad but this is beyond what you could have thought was possible,’ he continued.

Reid noted: ‘This is about a culture that tolerated his existence in the police service which is supposed to serve women who may go to police officers and make a complaint of rape.’

She went on to add: ‘The idea that he was able to get away with 80 offences is absolutely disgusting.

‘When you think about the number of convictions for rape that there are, it is minute, so that criminal threshold would be very remote anyway.’

Minutes later, when a photograph of Carrick popped up, Reid added: ‘It gives me the creeps just having his picture on the screen frankly.’

The Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley admitted ‘horrific’ failures by the force and apologised to victims.

‘We’ve let women and girls down, and indeed we’ve let Londoners down,’ he said.

‘I do understand also that this will lead to some women across London questioning whether they can trust the Met to keep them safe.

‘We have failed. And I’m sorry. He should not have been a police officer.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
