I’m a fashion expert and these horrifying 90s trends are going to be MASSIVE for 2023 – be warned SKELTS are back

EVEN though its 2023 fashion has turned back time to the nineties. 

Last year saw Y2K take centre stage with everything from UGG boots to exposed thongs and ultra low-slung waists trending on the catwalk, celebs and high street. 

From double and triple denim to ballet pumps, there are several 90s trends making a comeback, Clemmie revealedRex

But we’ve skipped back another decade to the 1990s. 

Cool Britannia was in reign, Oasis v Blur, Blair and The Beckhams all stole headlines but couples dressing and combats were king and this year they’re back. 

But not everyone will be happy with the return of some looks we’d consider cringe rather than cool. 

Here fashion editor Clemmie Fieldsend reveals the nineties trends that are back. 

SKELTS 

The micro mini crept back on the scene last year but is set to be one of the biggest trends this year. 

The skelt (that’s skirt-belt) was made famous by former glamour model Jodie Marsh and nineties supermodels Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford and Kate Moss is now available at high street stores like H&M and Zara.  

If you don’t fancy picking this trend up, look to nineties icon Jennfier Anniston‘s Rachel Green for a more modest mini.

DOUBLE AND TRIPLE DENIM 

From Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake‘s matching looks to Irish girl band B*Witched dressing head to toe in jean – double and sometimes triple denim is synonymous with nineties style. 

Fast forward to now and everything from jeans to maxi skirts, yes maxi skirts, the waists will be low and worn with denim bags, tops and bras, like Bella Hadid. 

But this time around make sure you leave your glue gun and rhinestones behind.

COMBATS 

Rebranded as “cargo” trousers and skirts but don’t be fooled, they’re just combats.

Think All Saints, Billie Piper, and S Club 7 style practical, multi pocketed pants. 

It girls of today are wearing theirs with crop tops with a bold logo and trainers or heels and – a look straight out of the nineties playbook. 

If you’re looking to get back into your combats there are an abundance available on the high street at Primark, New Look and Asos. 

DRESSES OVER JEANS 

Worn most recently by nineties icon Katie Holmes, the dress over jeans is back. 

Holmes, who played Joey Potter in nineties hit TV show Dawson’s Creek, wore a bustier style blue dress over baggy jeans which brought back floods of fashion memories for hundreds of nineties babies. 

And Katie is sure to be the first of many A-listers recreating the trend, but we hope that it doesn’t make its way back to us mere mortals.

BALLET PUMPS 

Remember the days when you would slip on your ballet pumps and feel every lump and bump of the pavement?

Or when it would rain and you’d spend the rest of the day with drenched feet?

Yes they’re back.

Kate Moss was queen of the ballet pump in the nineties, before style icons like Alexa Chung adopted them and they have returned to stars feet once more.

Plus they’re already lining the shelves at Primark.
