Kids of the 1990s are set to take a trip back to their childhoods with some of their favourite characters, as original stars from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers show reunite… and we can’t wait to strike a pose and shout ‘It’s Morphin’ Time!’ at our TVs.

Almost 30 years after the final episode of the superhero series aired, the team are set to come ‘face to face with a familiar threat from the past’ in a brand new adventure.

The one-off Netflix special – titled Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always – is being released to mark the 30th anniversary of the first season, which premiered on August 28 1993.

First-look images have revealed the return of David Yost as Billy Cranston, aka the Blue Ranger, and Walter Emanuel Jones, who played Zack Taylor, the first Black Ranger.

They’ll also be joined by Barbara Goodson, who voiced the villainous sorceress Rita Repulsa; as well as Catherine Sutherland, who became the second Pink Ranger, Kat, from season three.

Other cast members taking a trip down memory lane will be Steve Cardenas, who starred as the second Red Ranger, Rocky DeSantos; Karan Ashley, the second Yellow Ranger, Aisha Campbell; and Johnny Yong Bosch, the second Black Ranger, Adam Park.

Expressing his excitement over his return, Walter told Entertainment Weekly: ‘Our Ranger family runs deep.’

David, who was the longest-running original Ranger, expressed how special it was in particular to work with Walter again, recalling how they ‘went through the audition process together and launched the Power Rangers franchise’.

‘It was such a surreal experience to be on the set of Power Rangers again after 28 years,’ he added, as he looked back on their ‘amazing’ time back on set.

The special will see the returning Power Rangers stars be ‘called on once again to be the heroes the world needs’ while a ‘global crisis’ is taking place.

‘Inspired by the legendary mantra from the franchise “Once a Ranger, Always a Ranger” Once & Always reminds everyone when you become a Ranger, you are always a part of the Ranger family and always welcome,’ the synopsis adds.

Fans’ excitement went through the roof when the announcement was made by Netflix on Twitter, with one writing: ‘Wow, wasn’t expecting this. Mighty morphin hype.’

‘I’m gonna be busy April 19 y’all won’t hear from me at all I’ll be sobbing totally unrelated,’ someone else said, while another wrote: ‘Imma cry watching this.’

Some expressed their sadness over the absence of the late Jason David Frank, who played the character of Tommy Oliver, who was the Green Ranger before becoming the White Ranger.

The Power Rangers star and accomplished martial artist died in November last year at the age of 49, with a statement from his representative reading: ‘Please respect the privacy of his family and friends during this horrible time as we come to terms with the loss of such a wonderful human being. He loved his family, friends and fans very much. He will truly be missed.’

In response to the news of the Power Rangers special, one fan tweeted: ‘I miss him,’ while another wrote: ‘It won’t be the same without Jason David Frank.’

Someone else added: ‘Everyone saying it won’t be the same without JDF. Remember that he loved Power Rangers and it’s part of his legacy. Want to make him proud? Support the show and this special.’

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always is due to air on Wednesday April 19 on Netflix.
