The title may have gone to Hamza Yassin, but Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood believes Fleur East should have won the last series.

Last month saw the wildlife cameraman and presenter crowned the winner of Strictly with professional partner Jowita Przystal.

While Hamza had become a fan favourite and spoke about how competing had grown his confidence, Fleur was also praised for her skills on the dance floor and was one of the runners up alongside Helen Skelton and Molly Rainford.

But now Craig has admitted the singer and her professional partner Vito Coppola were ‘robbed’ of victory.

Speaking on the Magic Breakfast radio show, Craig told hosts Ronan Keating and Harriet Scott: ‘Fleur, can I say this on Magic darling, she was robbed, there you go that’s just me.’

‘I mean I absolutely love Fleur…for me in the final anyone could have won, I think Hamza did an absolutely spectacular job and he had all the audience behind him which is really important as well.

‘But I thought Fleur really came out of her shell and she was absolutely extraordinary. And I’m not just saying that.’

The choreographer also commended Fleur for being able to drag herself out of the ‘dance gutter’ after she found herself in the dance-off several times.

He also spoke about the Strictly Come Dancing live tour and praised her performance in that show.

‘She’s doing her Destiny’s child track which I absolutely adore. That’s one of my favourite favourite routines…she is spectacular,’ he said.

Having been a judge on all 20 seasons of the show, Craig has seen many famous faces push themselves when competing, but also admitted he had a favourite of all time.

He singled out politician Ann Widdecombe – who was partnered by Anton du Beke in 2010.

‘I’m going to say this because it was so much fun, it’s actually a video I keep looking at over and over and over again,’ he said.

‘Ann Widdecombe, Ann Widdecombe wins in that yellow outfit hands down, I mean she is sort of what the show is about, so that’s a great question…there’s been so many fantastic people.’

While she didn’t win, Fleur did thank the public for ‘bringing happiness back’ to her family’s lives after one particularly emotional performance towards the end of the season.

Speaking about paying tribute to her late dad, who died from a heart attack in 2020, she said she had ‘loved every second of it’.

She added: ‘I was going to do this show for my dad, I just know that he’s been here every step of the way.’

Strictly Come Dancing is streaming on BBC iPlayer. Strictly Come Dancing The Live Tour is in Birmingham until Sunday, then touring until 12 February.
