Cobra Kai, the Karate Kid spin-off that’s proved a sensation among Netflix subscribers, is set to come to an end with season 6.
The announcement was made with a teaser for the upcoming final outing, which first premiered in 2018 on YouTube Red, three years before making the move over to the streaming giant.
Over 30 years after William Zabka and Ralph Macchio first came face-to-face in the original Karate Kid movie as rivals Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso, Cobra Kai has become a beloved show among longtime fans of the franchise and newcomers alike.
In a statement, the creators of the series, Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, explained how they always intended to end the story on their own terms, with a release date for season six yet to be revealed.
‘Reacquainting the world with the Karate Kid universe has been our humble honour,’ they said.
‘Making Cobra Kai has allowed us to join the same hallowed dojo once inhabited by the great Robert Mark Kamen, John Avildsen, Jerry Weintraub, and all the amazing original cast members.
‘It has also enabled us to play sensei, expanding the original storylines and birthing a new generation of underdogs. We’ve never once taken this opportunity for granted.’
They stressed that their ‘day one goal’ was to end Cobra Kai on their own terms, ‘leaving the Valley in the time and place we’ve always imagined’.
‘So it is with immense pride and thankfulness that we are able to announce that achievement. The upcoming season six will mark the conclusion of Cobra Kai,’ they concluded.
William shared the teaser for season six on Instagram, writing in the caption: ‘It’s time to finish the fight! The sixth and final season of COBRA KAI is coming soon to Netflix.’
Ralph shared an almost-identical post on his own page, as fans rushed to share how sad they’ll be to say goodbye to Cobra Kai.
‘NOOOO not the final. We need more seasons,’ one person commented on Instagram, while another wrote: ‘I am sad that it’s gonna end, but the storyline of the season 6 is the most logical way for this story to end.’
One person admitted: ‘I don’t know what I’ll do once it’s gone,’ as someone else shared: ‘I’m glad I can say I jumped on this train since 1984!’
The first five seasons of Cobra Kai are available to watch on Netflix.
