Warning: spoilers ahead for The Last of Us episode 2.
The Last of Us viewers have been left utterly disgusted by an unexpected and horrific kiss that takes place in episode 2, with one person saying that ‘nothing can be more gross’ than what they witnessed.
In the latest instalment of the TV adaptation of the video game series, Joel (Pedro Pascal), his smuggling partner Tess (Anna Torv) and their ‘cargo’ Ellie (Bella Ramsey) make it to the state house in Boston where they believe a squad of Fireflies are waiting for them.
After finding the entire unit of the resistance fighters dead or infected, Tess reveals she’s been bitten and so her fate has been sealed.
Joel drags Ellie away while Tess struggles to set her lighter alight, as she attempts to blow up the building and all of the infected in it, who’ve arrived in a huge swarm.
Then, in a thoroughly disturbing moment, one of the infected saunters slowly over to Tess, fungal tendrils protruding from his mouth as he places his mouth on top of hers in a horrifying kiss of death.

Seconds later, Tess manages to spark a flame with her lighter and blows up the building, marking a departure from the game, where Tess instead dies while holding off soldiers from Fedra.
However, fans of the show were left aghast by the fungal kiss, with one tweeting: ‘I gagged and nearly threw up in my mouth. That was so gross.’
‘Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, can be more gross than that fungus kiss between Tess and the Clicker,’ another said, while someone else wrote: ‘Did that zombie just kiss Tess and send fungi tendrils down her throat?? This is insane?????’
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, series creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann opened up about the fungal kiss that’s now seared onto our brains.
‘These things don’t have to get violent unless you’re fighting them from spreading [the infection] further. That is realised in this beautiful, yet horrific way with Anna,’ Neil said, outlining how this particular infected person therefore was trying to spread the Cordyceps through the tendrils in its mouth to Tess.
He continued: ‘Craig smartly said, “What can we do to separate our infected even further from zombies?” It’s more than just a bite. There’s something else going on.
‘I wish we had that aha moment immediately, but we brainstormed so many different things that they could be doing. Some of them were pretty outlandish.’
The Last of Us is available to watch on Sky and NOW, with new episodes released on Mondays.
