Jennifer Connelly has thrown Tom Cruise’s hat in the ring for a possible Oscars nod ahead of the nominations announcement on Tuesday.

The actor icon led the way in the Top Gun sequel last summer, more than 30 years after the original flick hit the big screen.

Fans were lining up in their droves to watch the 60-year-old’s hugely anticipated return as Peter ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, alongside OGs Jennifer and Val Kilmer, and newbies Miles Teller and Glen Powell.

Speaking about a possible tip for an Academy trophy, his co-star said a nomination would be well-deserved.

Heaping praise on the ‘extraordinary’ actor, Jennifer told Variety: ‘He does an amazing job in the movie. He’s extraordinary as a person and fantastic as an actor, and I think that he is just perfect.

‘He embodies that character so beautifully, and I think he absolutely deserves it.

‘I think that the film is a really well made film and it’s really hard to make a film like that.’

‘Also, thinking about Tom’s work, think of the things that he did for that role. Besides all the stuff on the ground and how wonderful he is in those scenes and creating those relationships… I think the relationship he has with Miles’ character is so beautiful and moving.

‘But the work that he did to accomplish those flying sequences, it’s something else.’

We don’t have long to wait to see if Tom is among the nominees as they will be announced on January 24.

The Hollywood icon is known for doing his own stunts on movie sets, going above and beyond to make sure that all angles are covered.

During filming for the upcoming Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning flick, he paused shooting for a moment to share a sweet message for fans, thanking them for being so supportive for Maverick’s second outing

Of course, Tom didn’t do things by halves and chose the moment he was hanging out of a plane to share his admiration.

As you do.

‘Hey everyone. Here we are over stunning South Africa, where we’re filming Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning parts one and two,’ he said. ‘And I didn’t want the year to end without thanking you all for coming out to the theatres and thank you for supporting Top Gun: Maverick.’

After jumping from the plane, mid-flight, he continued: ‘Where was I? Oh yeah. Thank you for supporting Top Gun: Maverick and thank you for allowing us to entertain you. It truly is the honor of a lifetime.’

‘I’m running out of altitude, so I have to get back to work. We have to get this shot. You have a very safe and happy holiday, we’ll see you at the movies.’
