Dame Kelly Holmes has admitted she’s ‘living her youth’ at the age of 52, having come out as gay last year.

The Olympic legend revealed in June that she had kept a part of herself hidden out of fear of being prosecuted, though she knew she was gay when she was a solider in the Women’s Royal Army Corps in 1988 at the age of 17, and kissed a female comrade.

At the time she said: ‘I needed to do this now, for me. It was my decision. I’m nervous about saying it. I feel like I’m going to explode with excitement.

‘Sometimes I cry with relief. The moment this comes out, I’m essentially getting rid of that fear.’

And now, the sports star has spoken about being able to live her youth after coming out six months ago.

Joined by Christine Lampard, Gloria Hunniford and Denise Welch on Thursday’s Loose Women, the panel were discussing ageing, while Dame Kelly revealed how she hates having gray hairs and isn’t keen to show signs of ageing.

She said: ‘I think the world changes so quickly, that I don’t want to miss out’.

‘You never know, we don’t know what’s around the corner, and the assumption is always that we’re going to grow old, which obviously isn’t always the case, but just say that we do grow old, I don’t want to miss out on what’s coming next,’ she added.

Denise chimed in: ‘The thing is, if you’re spending everyday worrying about ageing, considering you look and are amazing, and in a way living a new life really, are you not in a danger of ruining the life that you want so much by worrying that you are getting older’.

Dame Kelly replied: ‘Well no, I’m on dry January because for the past six months since coming out, I’ve literally been living my youth’.

The sporting star has previously shared that she is in a romantic relationship and, while she doesn’t want to share the ins and outs, she speaks fondly of her partner, saying: ‘It’s the first time I’ve had someone who I don’t introduce as a PA or friend.’

She added that, while she means ‘no disrespect’ to previous partners, those relationships have only been ‘a small part’ of her life.

‘They haven’t been in this fearful world with me for 34 years.’

Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV.
