Netflix has spoken out against claims of ‘serious injury’ on the set of a Squid Game-inspired reality show, saying that they ‘care deeply about the health and safety of our cast and crew’.
Following the release of the gory South Korean drama – which premiered on the streaming platform in 2021 – it was announced that a reality spin-off show was in the works.
The programme, titled Squid Game: The Challenge, was described by the firm as ‘the biggest reality competition ever’, with the application announcement revealing that 456 players would compete for a prize of $4.56million (£3.7million).
It was recently claimed in the media that while taking part in a challenge inspired by the Red Light, Green Light game in the first episode of the original drama, some of the participants who were facing extremely cold temperatures required medical attention.
A report in The Sun alleged that some of the contestants were so cold that they ‘couldn’t move their feet’, according to players who were eliminated.
Netflix and production companies Studio Lambert and The Garden have stressed that ‘any claims of serious injury are untrue’ following the publication of the report.

‘We care deeply about the health and safety of our cast and crew, and invested in all the appropriate safety procedures. While it was very cold on set – and participants were prepared for that – any claims of serious injury are untrue,’ they said in a statement sent to Metro.co.uk.
It’s understood that three players required medical attention for mild conditions, with medics present on set at all times.
Production on the reality competition is said to have begun on Monday at Bedford’s Cardington Studios, Variety reported.

The Red Light, Green Light game involves players racing to reach the finish line first, but when the person on the end – who in Squid Game, was a gigantic robotic doll – turns around, they have to be as still as statues.
In Squid Game, if contestants were spotted moving, they were shot dead on the spot.
Of course, the game wasn’t going to be exactly the same when played in real life, with the killer element removed.
According to the publication, the reality show’s version was filmed in a former airplane hangar, which is believed would have been pretty cold given how low the temperature was outside.
It’s believed that the players received thermal underwear and hand warmers to use during filming.
Squid Game is available to watch on Netflix.
