If the Oscars announcements have whet your appetite for a trip to the flicks, then have we got a treat for you.
They may not all be worthy of a little gold statue, but there’s something in our bunch of picks for everyone.
Need a good old-fashioned romcom to blast away the January blues? J-Lo can sort that with Shotgun Wedding.
In the mood for some Bollywood? Shan Rukh Kahn returns in action thriller Pathaan.
And for an Oscar contender, you can’t go wrong with All The Beauty And The Bloodshed, a genius retelling of artist Nan Goldin’s battle against the Sackler family over their manufacturing of the opioid painkiller OxyContin.
One thing’s for sure. You won’t be stuck for choice.
Shotgun Wedding
Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel in Shotgun Wedding (Picture: Ana Carballosa)
A sunny J-Lo romcom set on an island resort? Just the smile your January blues ordered, this frothy nonsense casts the ageless Ms Lopez as Darcy, above, an uncertain bride whose groomzilla boyfriend (Josh Duhamel) is obsessed with creating the ‘perfect wedding’ in a Philippines paradise. Problems arise when the ceremony is invaded first by Darcy’s ex (Lenny Kravitz) and then by pirates.
This raises enough high jinks involving zip wires, hair extensions and bashing bandits over the head with stiletto shoes to keep you entertained.
Co-produced by Lopez, it also showcases the ageless icon’s smoking-hot body. And why not? It’s left to White Lotus star Jennifer Coolidge to voice what we’re all thinking as she gazes at those super-toned abs, ‘I just wanna ask, is that genetics, or…?’
15. Out Friday on Prime Video
All The Beauty And The Bloodshed
Nan Goldin in All the Beauty and the Bloodshed (Picture: Supplied)
Oscar-nominated and tipped to win every other best documentary gong, too, this would be simply a portrait of photographer Nan Goldin in other hands. However, director Laura Poitras has constructed something far more haunting.
It’s another David versus Goliath story from Poitras, whose previous work includes Edward Snowden doc Citizenfour. The film is framed by Goldin’s fight to bring wealthy art patrons, the Sackler family, to account for their manufacturing of OxyContin, the opioid painkiller Goldin was addicted to.
Yet Poitras’s genius is the way she links Goldin’s activism back to her mentally ill sister and delivers insights into the relationship between art, sexuality, power, pain and commerce, and society’s silencing of difficult women. All that and some seriously groovy photos too.
18. Out Friday in cinemas

Gerard Butler as Brodie Torrance (Picture: Lionsgate)
