What to watch this week – from Extraordinary to Grow-Keith Watson-Entertainment – Metro

There’s no shortage of must-watch TV this week (Pictures: Netflix/Walter Presents/Prime Video)

January is almost over – thank goodness. But that does mean February is just around the corner…

That’s right, winter shows no sign of abating just yet. Luckily, we have the pick of this week’s top TV to keep you entertained while the days are cold and the nights are long.

Looking for a gripping foreign drama to transport you somewhere new? Try The Snow Girl, set in sunny Spain but a dark thriller.

Or if you’re in the market for something to lighten the mood then try Extraordinary, the story of Jen, one of an unlucky few not to get blessed with a superpower on turning 18.

Read on for more small screen recommendations.

The Snow Girl

There are a host of good foreign dramas hiding away in the nether reaches of your Netflix menu and here’s another that might fit your need-to-binge desires.

Despite the title we are not in Scandi-land but in sunny Spain where a young girl goes missing during a street parade in Malaga. What follows is an interesting twist on a familiar story, given a melodramatic spin, and starring Milena Smit.

Available Friday.

Extraordinary

Just when you thought your superpower batteries had gone flat, along comes a comedy fizzing with enough original ideas to recharge them in a flash.

Our unfortunate heroine is Jen (rising star Mairead Tyers), one of an unlucky few not to get blessed with a superpower on turning 18, a fact her nearest and dearest never let her forget. But what superpower does she desire?

Available today.

Grow

Channel 4

Denmark routinely tops polls as the world’s happiest nation but you wouldn’t know it from its TV output, which puts drugs and murder centre stage. Grow is another offering that highlights the Danes’ dysfunctional side as we follow a warring family fighting over the drugs market.

It’s a moody grower (sorry) with strong performances from real-life brothers Andreas and Sebastian Jessen as siblings who find themselves on opposite sides of the law.

Available now.

The Legend Of Vox Machina

Prime Video

The Legend Of Vox Machina (Picture: Prime Video)

Season one of this animated action fantasy adventure was a word of mouth hit following a Kickstarter campaign and, with its mix of sly humour and eye-popping battle scenes, it’s not hard to see why.

It’s spun off from Dungeon & Dragons gameplay but there are also echoes of Game Of Thrones and a myriad other fantasies coupled with a sharp script that – Rings Of Power, take note – knows when to cut to the chase.

Season two available now.
