‘I don’t think it’s a racist thing to say…’

Matty Healy was perhaps saved from himself after he tried to share his profound thoughts about racism on-stage – before being awkwardly cut-off by his bandmates.

The 1975 brought their controversial tour to Leeds earlier this week as they continue to promote their latest album, Being Funny in a Foreign Language.

It’s been quite an interesting time on the road so far, with Matty, 33, making the audience swoon, cringe and gag in equal measure with his questionable on-stage antics. To date, he’s kissed several fans – albeit consensually – sucked thumbs, had his chest tattooed, and even eaten ‘raw meat’ in front of his audience.

During the band’s latest tour show, it seemed Matty wanted to get some things off his chest about racism, which didn’t go down too well with his bandmates.

In a video shared on TikTok, the Somebody Else hitmaker told the crowd: ‘I don’t think it’s a racist thing to say…,’ at which point the intro to their song, It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You), immediately began playing.

Matty was heard shouting: ‘Oh, for f**k sake,’ before dancing and starting to perform the track but clearly annoyed.

Fans are convinced he then mouthed angrily: ‘I was going to say something not racist.’

Referring to The 1975’s drummer, George Daniel, one fan joked under the post: ‘George said not today,’ while another added: ‘George needs the paychecks.’

Predicting Matty’s next statement, a fan laughed: ‘They knew it was gonna be outta pocket.’

One quipped: ‘George’s life flashed in front of his eyes as he ran to press the button to intro the song.’

‘The rest of them not trying to get cancelled,’ another joined in.

One praised: ‘This is the best PR move I’ve ever seen.’

The 1975’s tour seemed to reach its peak earlier this month when they were joined on-stage by none other than Taylor Swift, who made a surprise appearance at their gig in London.

Her mere presence seemed to have an unexpected effect on Matty, who vowed not to kiss anyone at the show out of respect for the pop icon.

‘I’m not kissing anybody in front of Taylor Swift, have some respect,’ he told the roaring crowd according to reports from concert-goers.

‘In front of the Queen – it’s not happening!’

Perhaps Taylor should attend every show…
