Wouldn’t we all, Sam.

Sam Smith would love nothing more than to see Brad Pitt in a thong, after admitting they now wear one every day because ‘they just slice you up in the right way’.

The 30-year-old has opened up about their latest fashion choice as they become more comfortable in their skin.

The Stay With Me hitmaker came out as non-binary and confirmed they were using they/them pronouns in 2019, saying: ‘I’m not male or female, I think I flow somewhere in between. It’s all on the spectrum.’

Since then, Sam’s fashion sense has evolved with their identity, and while playing a game called ‘Holy or Unholy’ – in a nod to their new single, Unholy – Sam said thongs were the latter.

‘But I love them. I’ve started wearing thongs, I wear them every day now,’ they told ET Canada.

‘It’s fabulous! They just slice you up in the right way.’

Asked which celebrity they’d like to see in a thong, they replied: ‘We need to see Brad Pitt in a thong. We have to, right? There’s so many people I want to see in a thong!’

The Unholy singer has been on quite the journey with their body, and recently said they had the ‘opposite’ of body dysmorphia, after growing up hiding behind clothes.

‘Within my industry, there is definitely that question of, “What should a pop star look like?” When I was 25 I came off tour exhausted,’ they told the Sunday Times.

‘Every time I went to the pool I felt self-conscious, but I forced myself to take my top off. It paid off because I now have the opposite of body dysmorphia.’

But it’s not just the icon’s clothes that are evolving with their identity, but their music too, as the singer dubbed their most recent and fourth studio album, Gloria, their most authentic yet.

‘I’ve always been authentic,’ Sam clarified. ‘I just think asking a 24-year-old to be their 100% self in front of 20,000 people was never going to happen. I showed 70% of who I was then and a lot of that has to do with me being gay.

‘As I got older, though, I realised there’s no shame. I wasn’t being inauthentic – you just keep some things to yourself until you’re ready.’

Sam has also spoken about how with every decision, from what jewellery to wear, to which lyrics to write, they want to have a ‘reason for everything’.

Speaking last year, Sam explained: ‘I’ve really made sure that inside the music there’s a reason for everything. I’ve been intricate with the way I’ve made it.

‘I want it to be the same with jewellery and all my clothes so that when you look deeply, there’s a message behind every single part.’

Sam’s new album includes references to LGBTQ+ cultural touchstones such as the 1990 documentary Paris is Burning, drag queen Divine and Judy Garland’s rendition of Over the Rainbow.

All in all, Gloria is very much about self-acceptance – and we’ll cheers to that.
