I couldn’t tell you one thing that happened on Love Island last summer before Ekin-su Cülcüloğlu inexplicably crawled on the floor to get a kiss from Jay Younger.

And sure enough, after watching every single episode of this winter’s edition, I couldn’t tell you one thing that’s happened other than two girls that vaguely knew each other before entering the villa have seemingly had the same argument every day for a week.

Right now, there’s just one contestant who has convinced me to keep one toe in and that is Love Island’s loveliest contestant ever, Will Young – aka Farmer Will.

He’s been the undeniable star of the show.

I didn’t know much about the 23-year-old before Love Island, but when my boyfriend caught a glimpse of an episode last week he jumped up with joy.

Omg Farmer Will!

Bearing in mind he’s the type of guy that if you put Kim Kardashian in the Spice Girls and asked him to pick the odd one out in the line-up, I genuinely don’t think he’d have a clue.

If we’ve learned anything from this series, it’s that we’d all rather watch Will being a gentle gem than empty-headed future fashion models

It turns out that before he entered the villa, Will had already made a huge name for himself on TikTok; he’d made videos with Claudia Winkleman and was easily the most famous influencer going into any series.

On paper, it would sound like he could be the most sought-after islander.

However, that hasn’t been the case.

Immediately he was compared to the likes of Curtis Pritchard, Hugo Hammond and Dr Alex George by viewers, three islanders who unwillingly became the comic relief of their respective series.

Some of the clangers that came out of Curtis still make me shudder today and nothing could prepare us for that cringeworthy Hollyoaks cameo.

Initially, it seemed Will was just another Love Island fool, remembered for his comically bad dancing and sun-beaten red face shining bright alongside the perfectly bronzed bodies of his co-stars.

He was the guy who didn’t get picked in the first coupling up ceremony, and made Lana visibly squirm when he approached her for a chat while they were reluctantly coupled up.

However, unlike Curtis, Hugo or even Dr Alex, who has won over fans since leaving Love Island, there’s a sincere naivety and desperately hopeful heart at Will’s core, which makes him one of the most memorable and, for me personally, attractive islanders to date.

The other ‘fools’ always seemed to think they were a gift to women, even if actual women were looking to quickly return the present.

Will, however, is the most gentle man with a sweet heart to ever walk into Love Island and thus far is carrying the entire series on his shoulders, even if they’re desperately crying out for a bit of aloe.

He’s the first to comfort any of his hysterical co-stars, with genuine affection and concern without a single trace of game-play.

He looks as though he’s on the brink of a nervous breakdown whenever there’s a cross word or raised voice.

Thankfully, he seems pretty smitten with Aussie bombshell Jessie Wynter, the first girl to really pay him any romantic attention.

In fact less than a week after she moved in and under 24 hours after their first date he said he was in love.

Now if anyone else in the villa had made a claim like that I’d be horrified, and rightly so.

But for Will, I’m clearing my schedule and praying he and Jessie become the quickest islanders to walk down the aisle after leaving the show – even if I’m not sure he’s really quite considered the logistics when she returns to Australia and he’s back on his Buckinghamshire farm.

But that naivety just adds to his charm.

Will may appear to have been thrown into Love Island to be the butt of the joke, but instead he’s become the most likeable and entertaining islander there by a mile.

If he could win on his own, the £50,000 would already be his.

When Olivia Hawkins first arrived I had high hopes – she radiated the explosive Maura Higgins energy that’s been missing for years. Sadly, I was mistaken.

I don’t think I can endure another episode of Olivia pulling Tom Clare for a chat, despite him never asking her for one, to then have another row with Zara Deniz Lackenby-Brown.

Outside of that it’s just become everyone else mindlessly deep-diving into ‘connections’, which to the outside world, don’t exist.

For the first time in a long time, it feels like Love Island has been so uneventful that even as a superfan it’s become a real slog to keep up.

If Will wasn’t in there, I can’t see who else we could possibly root for.

He’s the glaring sign that Love Island needs to change.

Too often has its cast been full of vacuous influencers, models and footballers, when ultimately the only thing that keeps fans engaged is a personality and, right now, it seems to me like Will is the only one in there that has one at all.

If we’ve learned anything from this series, it’s that we’d all rather watch Will being a gentle gem than empty-headed future fashion models who have literally done and said nothing memorable whatsoever in almost a fortnight.

Without Will, this Love Island really would be nothing.

He’s keeping me engaged – sunburn and all.

Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2
