Carol Vorderman has opened up about how her former friendship with Michelle Mone soured, saying that she ‘dropped her like a stone’ once she ‘realised what kind of person she was’.

In December last year, it was reported that Lady Mone, a Tory peer, was taking a leave of absence from the House of Lords after reports claimed that she raked in £29million from PPE (personal protective equipment) contracts.

The former lingerie tycoon’s spokesperson said at the time: ‘With immediate effect, Baroness Mone will be taking a leave of absence from the House of Lords in order to clear her name of the allegations that have been unjustly levelled against her.’

On Friday’s This Morning, Carol, 62, brought up Lady Mone, 51, while during a discussion about PPE, while joining Gyles Brandreth and co-hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary for a chat about the latest headlines in the news.

‘Now I cannot talk about useless PPE without talking about Michelle Mone, who was brought into the House of Lords as a Baroness by David Cameron,’ she said.

‘We know she has taken leave of absence without losing the Tory whip to start with, because she was actively involved – as it goes – with a company called PPE Medpro.’

The former Countdown star continued: ‘Now Michelle Mone, I knew many years ago, and then dropped her like a stone as soon as I realised what kind of person she was.

‘Sue me, Michelle!’ she added, lifting her hands up for the camera.

Alison chimed in to add: ‘Can I just say, she’s not here to defend herself.’

Carol responded: ‘No, she’s not here to defend herself, but I’m repeating what has been said in the press and what has been proven to be true.’

It was previously claimed that Lady Mone allegedly recommended the firm PPE Medpro for £203m worth of contracts during the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to documents seen by The Guardian and reported on in November last year, tens of millions of pounds of the manufacturer’s profits were put into an offshore trust, from which Lady Mone and her adult children are said to have benefited.

Lady Mone has previously denied having a connection to the firm.

In December, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said that he was ‘absolutely shocked’ by the claims that Lady Mone secretly received £29m from a PPE company that she was alleged to have lobbied ministers for.

Lady Mone denied the allegations made against her, sharing a post on social media in late November that read: ‘Don’t believe everything you read, or everything you think,’ while PPE Medpro also denied wrongdoing.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
