Sarah Michelle Gellar has stressed that fans don’t have to keep reminding her that Buffy the Vampire Slayer came to an end two decades ago – as even though she ‘loves’ the passion for the show, she’s well aware of how much time has passed.

From 1997 until 2003, the actor played the lead role in the series as Buffy Summers, before reprising the character in the spin-off Angel.

Sarah has remained a beloved fan-favourite Hollywood star in the years since, and opened up on tonight’s Graham Norton Show about the interactions she continues to have with die-hard fans.

Having been welcomed onto the BBC programme alongside Claire Foy, M Night Shyamalan, Rob Beckett and Sam Smith, the 45-year-old admitted: ‘People love to remind me that it is 20 years.’

She continued: ‘I love that people still reference it, but I don’t need the actual date and passage of time so people realise how old I am!’

The Scooby-Doo star also opened up about the importance of safeguarding young actors on set, and the impact she’s able to have as an executive producer on her new supernatural TV series Wolf Pack.

‘It is important to me to be able to protect the material and, more than that, I can protect the cast,’ she said.

‘I came up in Hollywood at a time when it was difficult for young actors. It’s still not perfect but I can help create a safe work environment.

The other day, she enjoyed a Buffy reunion with Angel actor James Marsters, who first debuted as Spike in the original series, at the premiere of her new TV show Wolf Pack in Los Angeles, much to fans’ delight.

Sarah stars in Wolf Pack alongside Love Actually’s Rodrigo Santoro, as well as Armani Jackson, Bella Shepard, Chloe Rose Robertson and Tyler Lawrence Gray.

She admitted that she initially was hesitant about agreeing to appear in another teen TV drama.

However, after reading the script, it piqued her interest.

‘I had no intention of reading it, but then we got deeper in the conversation around mental health, which is very timely. The werewolves are a metaphor for teenage anxiety,’ she stated.

The Graham Norton Show airs tonight at 10.40pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
