I’m a fashion expert and these styles of winter coats are making you look tacky – it’s bad news for quilted coat lovers

STAYING stylish and warm during winter is no mean feat.

You’re wearing layer upon layer of thick knitwear and heavy coats, plus a hat and scarf, leaving you feeling like the Michelin Man.

Thick wrap coats with a belt mean you won’t lose your figure and they keep you cosy, and a puffer means you can still show off your legs.

But there are some styles you should steer clear of that could be making you look out of date and a bit naff.

Here, Clemmie Fieldsend says these styles of coats should be avoided.

PARKA

I get it, parkas are practical and a safe bet when it comes to leaving the house.

Likely to be shower proof and cosy, but unfortunately the parka has had its day.

It hasn’t been an on-trend coat for the last few seasons and we all know what happens to that faux fur lined hood when it rains – yes, the wet dog smell.

Save your style, and your senses, and ditch yours now.

LONG DUVET COAT

Duvet coats are just that, they make you feel like you’re still bundled up in bed even if you’re waiting for the bus.

Unfortunately the world and his wife now wear a duvet coat, making them common and tacky.

And despite them being the most practical of winter warmers, their padded silhouette does make you look like the Michelin Man.

ANIMAL PRINT

Two iconic barmaids come to mind when you think of animal print coats, Bette Lynch and Cat Slater.

But the fictional soap stars, played by Julie Goodyear and Jessie Wallace, are hardly up there with fashion’s finest and who wants to be compared to intentionally tacky characters?

Plus a leopard print coat is hard to wear, you can’t clash another print and pops of colour against the muted shades of brown and black make you look like you’ve got dressed in the dark.

SHAGGY SHEARLING

Big, baggy and shaggy were go-to coats in the noughties. Think wrapping up on a night out but still looking like Paris Hilton.

But they were on trend then, not now.

They’re the type of faux fur coats that shed a lot of strands, you know the ones that get in your eye and on every thing you brush past, including the clothes you wear underneath.

This season, try plain shearling. It’s a huge trend at the moment and will keep you looking good and feeling toasty.

Get your hands on this shearling inspired Primark coat that’s just like a North Face jacket but £250 cheaper.

And don’t forget about the rest of your look too.

Make sure you have the right underwear, we tested the best shapewear knickers that will accentuate your figure.

And pair with this seasons must have shoes, Uggs, but bag this bargain pair that will save you £100.
