The mum of one, from Edinburgh, has carved out a dedicated and supportive community of other plus-sized fashionistas on the social media channel.

She has always had a passion for fashion, picking up her first retail job in Miss Selfridge at 16.

But after struggling to find clothes she liked in her size the mum admits she started to dread buying new outfits.

She said: “A few years back I hated shopping for myself. I hated how shops did not cater for my body.

“I used to hide behind the colour black. I literally lived in black leggings, black tops. Black, black, black. I just hit a rut.

“I think it’s an age thing as well, to be honest. You have kids and then you forget who you actually are.

“But through Instagram I found other plus size and body positive people whose style I loved and found sites online that catered for my body – and not just a cold shoulder top with a butterfly on the front, oh and diamantés.

“Once I realised there is fashion out there that I loved and could wear with confidence I was back to loving getting ready to go out and wear my clothes with confidence and being kinder to myself.

“My daughter is nearly 16 and a lot of the reason I want to be confident is to show her she can be too.”

Finding her love for fashion again, Nicola – a mature student – is now helping others to embrace their curves and style.

Sharing her top tips for dressing with confidence, she said: “Try something new. So for me I was always in skinny jeans as my legs are my slimmest part of my body but then I decided one day to try mom jeans and oh my god I love them. I love how I feel in them.

“I also say try colour even if it’s just one item try it. Black is such a beautiful colour and can be elegant and slimming but so can colour.

“Oh and try a tuck – I have a belly but just a slight tuck can actually be flattering and just change the whole look of the outfit.”

And it’s not just what you wear that can make a difference to how you feel in outfits.

Nicola revealed she always ignores what size it says on the hanger and avoids changing rooms in shops.

She told the Scottish Sun Online: “I used to be so ashamed of my size label but now if I need to go up a size I do.

“Same if I need to go down a size. I know these clothes, especially fast fashion, are made in bulk and not made 100% to the right size.

“It’s not as if I am walking about with a sign saying this is a size 24. No one needs to know I have had to size up to feel more comfortable.

“I never try on in the shops as that lighting in there is the enemy. It can make you come away feeling so down and deflated.

“If I do buy in store I take it home and try on with my accessories, my shoes and my lighting.

“I also buy out of season. The sale or outlet sections online are great to pick up a piece that you can then mix with something in season.”

She added: “And take photos of yourself. Don’t delete them as soon as you take them, put them in a folder and go back a few hours, days or weeks later.

“I bet you can find nicer things to say about that picture rather than what you’re saying to yourself in the moment.”
